Jon's Story

Life (UPDATED ON 1/8/2016) Lots of neat things have happened since Lakes.... My favorite saying is "I may be getting older, but I refuse to grow up". I joined the US Naval Reserve after Lakes because I wanted to serve my county but not necessarily be drafted. I served aboard the USS Narwhal SSN 671, a fast attack submarine for over 3 years. When that active duty ended I returned to Lakewood and spent the next 4 years attending Drills at the Naval Reserve Center in Tacoma. In Oct. of 1974 I left the Naval Reserve to join the Air Force Reserve. In the Air Force Reserve I was a member of a Reserve Civil Engineering Unit at McChord AFB. I retired in Oct 98 as an E9 with 32 years total reserve service. While in the Reserves I went to University of Washington and then worked for the Wash. State Department of Transportation & retired May 2000 with 34 years. I was married and have two beautiful daughters. I divorced in 1985 and was awarded custody of both my daughters. I then raised these two beautiful girls by myself. They are now grown and have families of their own. As of this date (Jan 28, 2010) Heidi (the older of the two) has three sons, her oldest is 12 and her twins are 2. Yup, I said twins, IDENTICAL twins at that. My other daughter Nicki has a 12 year old son and a 4 year old daughter. After my retirement from WSDOT in 2000 I vowed that if I went back to work it would be because I wanted to and not because I had to. And I kept that promise to myself. After retiring I accepted a job with a company that serviced ATMs. That company was bought out by a bigger company. This new company was also bought up by a yet bigger company. Finally that company was bought by yet a more bigger company and I lost my job. Shortly after my retirement from WSDOT I became a volunteer at the Lacey/Olympia Amtrak Station. This is a beautiful station on the outskirts of Lacey that serves this South Puget Sound area. The station was built in 1993 with donated building materials, donations of $$$ with volunteer labor. We keep the station open daily from 8:00a.m. to 8:30p.m. This is the only station in the Amtrak system to be run completely by volunteers. On December 7th 2004 I became a volunteer with the Lacey Police Department. They have a group called Senior Patrol. We all have police commissions. Our main purpose is to provide a service of house checks for the residents of Lacey. If you live within the City Limits of Lacey and go on vacation. We will check your house daily during your absence. Another task we do is monitor Disabled Parking Spaces within the City. I can write the $450 ticket if you park in a disable parking space and you are not authorized to do so. In 2011 I became a volunteer fireman with East Olympia Fire District 6. No, I am not a firefighter. Our fire district is the only one in Thurston County that has a mobile rig that can go to major fires and fill the SCBA bottles (air bottles) the firefighters were on their backs. I am the driver and operator for ISU6 (Incident Support Unit 6). It is mutal aid for all of the 15 other fire districts in the county My hobby & passion is the Corvette. I currently own a 2008 Corvette convertible. This is the 3rd Corvette that I have owned. I bought a 1976 Vette in 1991 and totally restored it. I owned it for 11 years when I sold it to step up to a 1995 Corvette convertible. I owned it for 6 years when in October of 2007 I ordered my 08 Vette. I took delivery of ...Expand for more
it in mid December 2007. Most likely the biggest thrill I have had in my life with all my clothes on was being able to travel back to Bowling Green Kentucky to the plant where the Corvette is assembled and watch my Vette being built. A close friend and I spent almost 7 hours watching MY Vette being put together. This was totally awesome. AND I got to be the person that started the engine in it for the VERY FIRST TIME. I have spent a lot of time in retirement travel and took Amtrak around the United States in 2001. I drove the 95 Corvette to Monterrey CA in August 2001 for a 5 day Corvette event. I took another lloonnnggg trip in April 2003. I drove the 95 Vette from Washington State to Bakersfield CA, turned left and continued on to Mooresville NC. I was part of a special closed tour of DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc.) put together by the NCM (National Corvette Museum) and DEI. One Hundred MCM Lifetime Members got the tour of a lifetime at DEI. We were taken behind the scenes and got to see parts of the Dale Earnhardt Inc headquarters and No. 1, 8 and 15 NASCAR race car shops that the public is never allowed into. From Mooresville we continued the trip (in a 100 Corvete caravan) to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green KY. The tour and trip with the 100 other Corvettes ended here. When all the festivities were over I headed west for my return trip home. I put 6777 miles on my Vette in 20 days. It truly was a once in a life time event. In June of 2003 I made yet another trip east. Only I did not drive cross country this time. Two round trips to the east coast in less than two months would have been just two much. I flew to Nashville (and boy did my arms get tired... ha ha ha) and met up with a member of my Corvette Club from here in Olympia. I spent a week traveling between Nashville and Bowling Green KY in my buddies Vette. The reason for this trip was the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette Celebration. I have never seen so many Corvettes in one place at one time. On one day at the NCM in Bowling Green there were estimated to be more than 4000 Corvettes in the parking lots. In 2004 I have driven to Des Moines IA with a friend towing his '61 Ford Unibody pickup (which I owned until I bought the 95 Vette) to participate in a 60-66 Ford pickup show. I have flown back to Groton CT to visit the Naval Submarine Base and meet with some Navy buddies and I also spent a week in Grand Bay AL with another submarine shipmate and his wife. Another activity that I picked up was that of being a Web Master. I currently take care of 4 different web sites. At one time I had as many as 12 websites that I took care of. Some of them I created and maintained and other I just maintained.. I also spend time daily on the internet. I subscribe to many email from various sources and this keeps me occupied and updated. I recently joined Facebook but am just learning the ins and outs of this. Look me up and send me a note either through here (Classmates) or via Facebook. IF YOU HAVEN'T FIGURED IT OUT ALREADY. RETIREMENT IS WONDERFUL AND I AM ENJOYING THE HELL OUT OF IT AS WELL AS MY 5 GRAND KIDS!!!!!! Although I graduated with the Lakes Class of 66 I attended Clover Park for a few months during my sophomore year (63-64) before moving and transferring to Lakes. I would love to hear from anyone that might have know me while at Clover Park in early 63 or while I was at Lakes from mid 63 to graduation in 66. My best to all Jon
