Jonathan's Story
After graduating high school, instead of kicking me out of the house my dad got me a job in Chicago. There I spent a year breaking and training young Lipizan stallions. I then attended the Potomac Horse Center to get e degree in Horsemastership. Following that I returned to Lincoln for a year for college for which I received a solid 1.0 GPA. Seeing that college was not happening, I moved to Knocklong Ireland to start a factory for the family business making boots. I spent about three years there making boots after which I returned to Omaha to work in the family business. In 1978 I met my first (yes first) wife Jan, while I was attending the Aspen Academy of Martial and Healing Arts. I resigned my position as VP of the Dehner Boot Company and Jan and I spent the next year traveling around the US on our motorcycles. While traveling, when we needed cash Jan would get a job nursing and I would get a job in a gravel pit. It did not take many menial jobs to see the benefits of nursing so I attended the University of Nebraska College of Nursing and ...Expand for more
graduated in 1982. We then traveled for another two years before returning to Omaha. In 1984 my father was asked to be the Master of Foxhounds for the North Hills Hunt in Omaha. He asked me to be the huntsman so for the next five years I worked as a nurse at UNMC, attended UNO to finish pre-med and hunted the hounds for the NHH. In 1988 I was accepted to UNMC College of Medicine where I got my medical degree in 1992. Seemed I was on the ten year plan. In 1992 we moved to Madison Wisconsin where for five years I completed a residency in anesthesia and fellowship in critical care. During that time I acquired and trained a three day event horse competing to the advanced level. In 1997 I stayed on at the University of Wisconsin as an anesthesiologist and intensivists. Jan and I split up in 1998. In 2004 Mary and I were married at Quartermaster Canyon on the South rim of the Grand Canyon. Mary has two sons. She is a cardiac anesthesiologist at the University. We live outside of Madison and continue to compete our horses and travel when we can.
