I did become a scientist (physicist, actually) as everyone projected, graduating with a PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard University, following a Physics MS and Physics Engineering BSE with an Electrical Engineering/Computer Science minor from the University of Michigan. For my PhD thesis I worked on hydrogenated Ge and Si amorphous semiconductors (possibly used in your video-cam, for solar photovoltaic cells, solar absorbers and for certain types of electronic detectors). I loved living in the Cambridge/Boston area while at Harvard, though I don't miss the congested traffic, snow storms and bitter-cold winter winds. Their fast, clean, efficient, color-coded subway was great for getting around this stimulating academic, cultural and historical haven. I met so many wonderful people and was privileged to have several Nobel Prize-winning professors, and many other notable ones, instructing and entertaining me.
For summers 1965 through 1974, as well as full time while getting my MS, I worked at the Ford Scientific Research Laboratory in Dearborn, Michigan--a quite respected lab in its heyday. Most of my career was with Lucent (formerly AT&T, now Alcatel-Lucent) Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, about 25 miles west of the NYC Holland Tunnel, also a wonderful place to live apart from the ridiculously high property taxes. There were really great people there--just my kind of folks! I was involved in the research and development of semiconductor lasers used in fiber optics systems which carry the Internet, telecom traffic, cable TV, Verizon FiOS, etc. I was also actively involved in technology transfer to AT&T Microelectronics manufacturing and in the project to lay the first trans-Atlantic fiber optic cable (TAT-8). Finally, in later years after the semiconductor laser R&D was complete, I became a senior systems software developer for large telecom digital signal processing systems called Packet-Voice Gateways (PVG for VoIP [voice over the Internet] and many other things) at the Holmdel, NJ Bell Labs location. I received four patents and wrote 39 external and proprietary internal publications throughout my Bell Labs career.
With the eventual financial demise of Lucent and the old Bell Laboratories (truly a major loss for the entire world!) I contemplated what to do with a much too early retirement. The mother of my children is deceased and I ended a second 13 year relationship/marriage many years back. I've had a couple of shorter relationships since then, too. If you know a tall, passionate, bright and far-out but stable woman, point her in my direction. I've lived in my New Providence home most of my time in NJ, completing a major exterior renovation in summer 2013. Right now I'm doing some much needed interior renovations and will start the installation of a gas fireplace shortly!
Both of my children are doing really well and work in the financial sector. My daughter Kendra, a confirmed world traveler and amateur photographer, graduated from NYU in spring 2001 and completed her MBA in May of 2009 from Fordham in NYC. She spent ma...Expand for more
ny years as an analyst-associate with Goldman Sachs until the investment bank shake ups and now holds a similar position with TIAA-CREF, also a great, huge organization. Kendra owns a nice condo in Jersey City, NJ but just moved into a house in Stamford, CT together with her Indian husband Ram, a one hour train commute from her NYC job. She was married on October 25, 2014.
My son, Charlie, graduated from Penn State in spring 2005. He completed his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Series 65 certifications a while back. He completed his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) degree in mid-2014 which is much like an MBA, but specifically for financial planners. He works with Lassus, Wherley & Associates, a highly-successful, local financial planning firm, primarily owned by ex-AT&T executives. He was married in 2012 and shortly thereafter purchased a beautiful, newly-constructed, tri-level townhouse in Cedar Knolls, NJ with his wife, Lisa. Both children are contemplating having kids soon.
I got very involved in Landmark Education, Tony Robbins and T Harv Eker programs for a while, great stuff--ultra-inspiring! I'm taking a hiatus from these activities now and built a super-powerful Intel i7 hex-core computer. I'm still very much the active techie and read voraciously, much from the Internet! I found the new Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology very interesting, so I got an FCC Amateur Extra Class license (AE2JP) to explore it fully. I joined the New Providence Amateur Radio Club (NPARC) which is populated by many ex-Bell Labs researchers and many other knowledgeable, interesting folks--that's great!!! I've given SDR presentations. I've been studying up on artificial intelligence lately. But that's not all...
I was certified to teach meditation, tantric yoga and Taoist studies in the more distant past, as was my second wife. I have also lifted weights since high school and used exercise machines on and off at Bally's and at home for decades. I slacked off on my exercise for a while and now I'm trying to get back into shape again--not easy at this age.
I love listening to live rock at the Jersey Shore--along with a cold Corona or Heineken, of course--perhaps the occasional shot of Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey! After Hurricane Sandy, almost all of my frequent haunts required rebuilding, a long, ongoing process. I've attended quite a number of rock festivals and events up and down the east coast, as well, EvolveFests being one of the most notable. Great subject matter for my photographic, audio-video passion and my trusty Nikon DSLR. For some examples look me up on Facebook /Jon.R.Pawlik. I've posted a few pictures here, too. After hearing all that great music, I recently decided to try to pick up electric guitar again. The old, used Fender Jazzmaster guitar purchased during my college days, tucked away in a closet, turned out to be worth a modest pile of cash currently. It's great fun playing my new, extensively-modified Fender Stratocaster guitar which contains Roland electronics to drive synthesizers, as well as other high-tech, music-making gear to simultaneously satisfy my techie and musical bents. I also have a monstrous audio-video system. I'm ALWAYS learning and doing something new, fun and exciting!
