Jose's Story

My Story starts when I arrived in Laredo, Texas back in 1975. My dad had just joined the Border Patrol and his first assignment was Laredo. When we arrived here the Laredo Air Force Base had just recently closed. Someone had just brought the old barracks and made them make shift apartments. So my family lived there for a while until my dad found a house for rent on Corpus Christi Street. By then school started so we were told we will be attending J.W. Nixon. It was me and my brother Mike that went there. They assigned a person to walk us through the campus to show us where everything was. The student was Alisa Garcia. My first year at Nixon was shaky at best. No friends and new student. I kind of hung low and out of the radar. Just went to my class and talked when I was spoken to. I was taking a ROTC class and met a lot of people there. I would eventually join the drill team and attended many competitions. Later I joined Track because I had ran track at my previous high school (Falurrias High). The competition was a bit more harsh on the 5A level. I met many jocks there and many became good friends like Pancho Farias, Jerry Garcia, Luis Gonzalez (Peaches), Robert Laurel, Ronnie Chamberlin, Meme Fernandez (Penguin), Danny Gonzalez (Baloney), Marco Gonzalez, Juan Hernandez, Ronnie Miller, David Hardin, Chris Garza, Joe Santos and others. They all made be feel at home. Once I showed them I could actually run the rest was fun. I would see other people on campus and just say hi but I really did not "connect" with anyone except my track friends. I would go out on the weekends to the drive-in movies (Border Town) and parties but really did not know anyone except the persons that I went with. Then one day I was told about a Jr and Sr. Prom. We all planned to go together. At the last minute I ditched my date cause of something I found out that I did not like. So I kind of wanted to distance my self from that. One of my friends asked if I was intreste...Expand for more
d in going on a blind date with his sister's friend. I agreed. I had no idea how this chick was going to look like or what. Any how he drove me to her house to pick her up. I waited for a while and met her five brothers! Then her dad. Finally her mom walked in and introduced her daughter. I was embarrassed because I felt this chick was way too pretty for me. I did not even want to look her in the eyes for fear I would see rejection. But she was cool. That night we went to the Civic Center where the dance was. There I ran into my brother and he saw my date and said he knew her. I got so very angry cause I did not want to go out with someone who had already went out with my brother. I was re-leaved to find that this was not so. Then it was picture taking time. I did not buy the picture coupon that your suppose to get prior to the prom. She pulled one out of her purse. I was kind of embarrassed and she said don't worry about it. So we took that picture in time. I had only known her for about an hour and half. We danced to a "Dream goes on Forever" by Todd Rundgren. About that time I fell totally in love with this girl. Right there and then I started praying cause I thought to myself I was really out of my league. Later we went into Nuevo Laredo (across the border) and ate at a restaurant. We kind of broke the ice there. My friends all were nice as we all went as a group. Later we went to a disco where we danced some more. Then home. I did not want the night to end. Cause I kind of knew that this was it. I would never see this girl again. Later I would meet her at a pizza inn with friends and talked a little. Then the pictures came in and we met at the school library. She signed one and gave it to me. I was so dazed and freaked that she would do that. The summer of 76 I was going to find a way to have her as a girlfriend. Thanks to her friends and mine it happened. She is now my wife and I love her with all my heart. I never stop thanking God.
