Jose's Story

I left San Benito in 1971 and moved to South Bend, Indiana. You never quite forget your home town or your roots for that matter. There's a saying to the effect that you can take a boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy. The same is true for small town boys. I lived and worked in South Bend, Indiana for several years. I joined the Marine Corps at the age of 21. I arrived in San Diego,Ca courtesy of Uncle Sam. I never looked back. Someone once said that opportunity knocks only once. I beg to differ. Opportunity knocks daily. You just have to recognize and appreciate it. I served my time in the military and I like to think that I served my country well. I worked a couple of mundane jobs in search of my calling. A situation occured where I had to change gears and carreers if you could call my job that. I started looking at my options. I saw several viable opportunities. However, I didn't know the first thing about computers much...Expand for more
less turning them on. That is to say I didn't know where the power button was...literally. No joke!!! That's when I decided to go into computing. Sounds pretty dumb..huh??? I graduated from a technical school after hitting the books and spending a lot of nights learning and working on systems. That was many many years ago. I became a systems engineer back in 2000. Today I work for the Department of the Navy and provide technical support for the United States Marines. I support the Medical personnell that take care of our wounded warriors. I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel a bit. I have traveled all over this great country as well as Central America. There is much more that I want to see. Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to realize it. I think of the plan God has for all of us. I believe that I did okay for a kid from a small town and the wrong side of the tracks. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Sincerely, Joe Garza
