Joseph's Story

After graduating MRHS, I attended Stevens Institute Of Technology in Hoboken for 3 terms. In my first term, I did rather well academically; I was also a "walk-on" for AFROTC. And I learned my first programming language, FORTRAN, at Stevens Tech. Unfortunately, I contracted Measles in my second term and was sent home. When I returned to school the following year, I found I was unable to pick up where I left off in my studies and I chose to join the Active Air Force. My regular Air Force career was mostly in Texas: Basic Training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio (1971); Computer training at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls (1971); then a "regular job" at Dyess AFB in Abilene (1971). While at Dyess I was deployed to Andersen AFB, Guam to help process an extremely large amount of aircraft data reporting during a deployment which I was later told was one of the "Linebacker" deployments. Unfortunately, we never received any orders for the deployment. Still, I had a good time on the Rock - some of us were initially sent to live at the Marbo Barracks (an old WWII facility), others in "Tent City"; and finally in base housing with our supervisor, MSgt Eugene Plencner, who had recently PCS'd to Andersen and let us stay wit...Expand for more
h him while waiting for his family to arrive. Not too long after that, the computers were upgraded, we became excess and were told to be "ready to go "at any time". And one day they packed us up on KC-135's heading for McChord AFB and we were on our way back. For a "special project" at Dyess (a random number generator for weight control purposes), I attended McMurry College in Abilene, TX to learn COBOL programing. At the end of four years I returned home to New Jersey and collected unemployment until I found a job as a computer operator at the Prudential office in Linwood. One day, my wife and I were riding on Tilton Road and saw a sign for the "177th Tactical Fighter Group". Out of curiousity, we stopped to see if they had any openings. After talking to a recruiter, I met with Bob Hagelin, the computer room supervisor and signed up as new member of the 177th. (It turned out Bob had plans for me -- I wrote a number of ) I retired as a Master Sergeant from the USAF Reserve on December 18th, 2008 after a total of 37 years of service -- 4 on active duty and 33 in the active reserve. I retired as a GS-11 from the Federal Civil Service on February 3rd, 2009. I am currently unemployed and live in Absecon, NJ.
