Joseph's Story
Here is a little about me after graduating from Wilkinsburg High School in 1958. I attended University of Tulsa on a track scholarship graduating with a Bachelor of Arts.
The University of Tulsa track team of 1961-62 was recognized in October, 2012 at the Homecoming football game for winning the Missouri Valley track championship two consecutive years. I was a co-captain the '61 team and ran the mile, half-mile and was part of the mile relay team. The performance of this track team has been ranked as one of the top ten accomplishments of the Tulsa University athletic teams.
After college graduation, I attended U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School, Newport, RI. and was commissioned as an Ensign on November 22, 1963 (the tragic day President JFK was assassinated).
During the Vietnam War I served onboard aircraft carriers and a destroyer as a communications officer before converting to a naval cryptologist supporting the National Security Agency. I achieved certification as Officer of the Deck (driving the ship) and Command Duty Officer (in charge during the commanding officer'Âs absence). I was involved in the historic Gulf of Tonkin episode in addition to seeing combat action off the coast of North Vietnam. My ship, the destroyer USS Turner Joy (DD 951), was hit by North Vietnamese shore guns on several occasions suffering damage to various parts of the ship, but luckily no loss of lives.
I was awarded numerous commendations and medals, including the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cr...Expand for more
oss), and five Vietnam Service Medals.
During this time I served on board various ships home ported in San Diego, Long Beach, San Francisco, CA and Bremerton, WA with shore duty in Washington D.C. and Okinawa, Japan.
I also graduated from the National Security Agency'Âs National Cryptologic School and while in the Naval Reserves, I served at various Naval Security Group Reserve Commands in the Los Angeles area. I retired at the rank of Captain on October 1, 1991 after 28 years of active/reserve Navy service.
Two of the ships I served onboard are currently museums, the aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego, California and the destroyer USS Turner Joy in Bremerton, Washington.
After release from active military duty, I worked for Litton Industries and General Dynamics as the Manager of Security. I was responsible for all security concerning U. S. Government classified information, retiring in 2002.
I also graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy as a state certified Los Angeles Police Officer. I served part time for several years within one of the LAPD stations.
During my first marriage I had five children, Michael, Shelly, Catherine, Sean and Megan. In 1995 I married Susanna Mikevich who had three children, Nina, Andre and Jevon from a previous marriage. Susanna and I live in Simi Valley, CA (Los Angeles area).
Susanna and I, after retiring in 2002, have enjoyed traveling extensively and seeing our combined 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. We have visited all the continents of the world, including Antarctica.
Susanna and I are enjoying our retirement! Life is good!
