Joseph (Joe)'s Story
2015 update: second grandson came in June. Doing well. His big brother turned four and loves his big bro role.
My 15 year corp gig is ending this year, so not sure what's next after the severance/retainer glow has worn out. I guess that's an opportunity knocking to figure out the "rest of the story" here in Silicon Valley.
School
At the last minute of PHHS the SJCC track coach recruited me away from my pre-registered courses in Aero Engineering at SJSU. Who knew that being a mediocre HS half-miler would lead me to strong connections with a number of different characters and careers? Not the least of which was a great coach, mentor and Godfather to my oldest daughter. He only made me into a mediocre College half-miler and Intermediate hurdler, but I can't even tell you how that choice connected me to a string of avocations and vocations and even led to my wife since 1981.
I had left SJSU in 1981 when we got married and never finished my Design degree. Yeah, I spent 2 years at SJCC (Drafting), 2 more at EVC (Design and Art) and 4 more working through SJSU (Industrial Design) without completing my last semester. A great intern job was too good to "waste time" finishing my degree. It all worked out, I only regret taking 26 years to finish a SJSU B.S (Special Major - Packaging: Graphics & Technology...Expand for more
). It took over 3 more years. I finally quit work to finish. I took 40 units from Summer 98 to graduation in May 99.
Workplace
In brief, did Industrial Design out of college, spun off into Graphic Design, was self-employed at home (~12 yrs) while raising kids, taught for a while, went back to school to become a Packaging Engineer in Medical Device Industry in 1999. Was at LifeScan in Milpitas for about a year and Boston Scientific from 2000 to now. Typical Corp job in a cube that is a great benefit to advancement of minimally-invasive cardiac procedures. Too much work and too few resources at the moment, but it's the same in every industry right now.
Had other "unique" jobs while self-employed that were great diversions when I could. Traveled all over shooting electronic-timing photos for Track & Field events and was a human subject for NASA Ames Research Center, Life Sciences Division. Many different studies including counter microgravity exercises and 3G Centrifuge exposure.
The important stuff in life have worked out well for Judy and I. Two brilliant daughters that swam for Cal Poly SLO for 4 years and are happily working in their fields. Both live in the area now. Jennifer and her husband Clif had our first grandson Graham. We enjoy taking care of him often. Jen's sister is the best Aunt ever.
