Joseph's Story

After graduating from Northwestern H.S in 1966, I and fellow graduate Bob Husak (Unfortunately Bob "passed on" in 2012) took a five-week trip to the wilds of the Upper Peninsula to fish, hunt, and "unwind". After trying out a series of construction and food industry jobs I applied for one of the then-easy to get jobs at the numerous GM assembly plants. In August of 1967 I started working on the line at GM and I enrolled at Flint JC and earned my associate degree in Science and mathematics. Vietnam came along and I spent the next 3 years, 2 months, 16 days, and 10 hours serving my country. My last 2-1/2 years were spent working in military corrections working with other troubled combat veterans. The ones I could not help continue to haunt me in my "night dreams" as do my war "night Demons"! The chaos and horrors experienced in War have a lasting effect on the mind, soul, and spirit. There are many shocking examples of Man's inhumanity to Man, and "innocents" that happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time that are hard to describe and talk about and should not be. It is impossible to rationalize the blind obedience a trained soldier exhibits when faced with an unclear and seemingly impossible objective. We often reacted violently in the name of duty, honor, country, and even vengeance. We honor our fallen and try to "readjust" to civilian life the best we can. Some of us are successful, many are not. Please look at the Dedications in each of my books and the "My Hidden Messages" section in the conclusion of my third book, Read "The Old Deer Hunter's Prayer" that I end each of my books with for added insight into my being. "Fifty Years of Memorable Hunting Experiences: Lessons Learned of a Michigan Outdoorsman" is was released in Mid-October of 2013. The unfortunate "undocumented" military veteran casualties of War are EVERYWHERE! Regrettably, many of these brave war veterans are found living on the streets. This should be an embarrassment to ALL Americans! Other troubled veterans like me choose to live in remote areas to face their demons in solitude. SOME of these troubled souls MAY be responsible for some of the Bigfoot sightings reported. I am known as "the Wexford County Bigfoot"! ---Most are not. Many eventually choose suicide as release from their torments. In my books I offer a viable alternative. Mother Nature has always been my greatest source of "regaining perspective" and continuity. She has persevered throughout history in times before, during, and after wars. Her soothing solitude, sources of sustenance, and offerings of "the challenge of the hunt" craved by many, including recovering War veterans, has been my salvation. My understanding and supportive wife Yvonna has made me one extremely lucky and productive person. Other than in sometimes helpful "counseling" sessions, talking about explicit war experiences is ill-advised.All this dredging up of the past only intensifies the surprisingly realistic "flashbacks" and "night sweats" experienced by war veterans. The sights, sounds, and even smells of War and death come flooding back into the subconscious consciousness. 'Floating talking heads" during my flashbacks are MY demons to try to conquer! So far I have been successful. After one of these horrific episodes, it is a shock for me to look in the mirror and see an old, weathered face where just moments before a young and virile 22-year old soiled and bloodied soldier face once peered back at me. I continue to face this repeating dilemma. Starting in June of 2018, I have finally turned to the VA for help with my PTSD "issues" that are increasingly getting worse! Wish me luck. After Vietnam I was a "changed" man. I wish that your compliments of me when I was in high school were still true ---That Joe Lunkas did not return from the war! I returned to GM and enrolled at the U of M(Flint), I earned my BA in Business Administration and Management with the help of the GI Bill and took a salaried position at GM i...Expand for more
n Quality and Reliability in 1982. I then put my outdoor writing career on "temporary" hold to face the challenges, frustrations, and long hours required. My sources of rejuvenation and the place where I organized my thoughts, action plans, and developed my solutions to my personal and professional dilemmas was and is in the wild outdoors. This concept is the basis for my first book entitled "Fifty Years of Deer-Stand Reflections, A Memoir of a Michigan Master Deer Hunter" released in late 2011 and available in both print and E book format. My first and second marriages predictably ended in divorce due in a large part to my War-induced "communications" issues. I suspected that this was a form of PTSD as it is now called. Not much was ever done to welcome home or help troubled returning Vietnam War veterans. Fortunately this is not the case anymore with returning War veterans. I continued with GM as a senior vehicle development engineer and problem solver at Flint's Fisher 1, then Willow Run, and then GM HQ in Warren spending the last 14 of my 40+ year career at GM's Milford Proving Ground as a senior vehicle development engineer and problem solver. Along the way, just over 30 years ago, I met and married my wife, best friend, and soul-mate Yvonna Marie Toler (a Southwestern HS 1966 grad girl). We raised our combined total of 8 children (each of us had 3 girls and 1 boy) and now have 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren with many more on the way. I "retired" from GM in 2007 and resumed my outdoor writing career For more information about me and my renewed (I was a prolific outdoor writer in the late 1970s and early 1980s) career as an outdoor writer, just Google my name: JOE LUNKAS on the Internet. The first 5 pages or so will answer most of your questions. You may enjoy reading my three books on "Lessons Learned of a Michigan Outdoorsman". Book3 of my trilogy was released in mid-October of this 2013. Book signings in the Flint area will be scheduled for all three of my books as well. I will keep you all posted via my Public Notes. It would be great to see some of my old school mates again! We now live in beautiful northern Michigan south of Traverse City at our home we call "The Cedars". Our 8 children are now leading their separate lives and producing grandchildren and great-grandchildren for me to introduce to my great outdoors! This is my continuing mission. My books are some of the "tools" I use to accomplish this enjoyable task. They also serve as testimony to my life as an outdoorsman. These writings, along with the free-lance outdoor articles I continue to write for outdoor publications like Woods-n-Water News and other local and national publications, insure my "immortality" of sorts. These "snap shots" of my life conveying my thoughts, memories, and messages to upcoming generations of outdoors-persons are my legacy. These individuals will one day inherit my great outdoors and the responsibilities as a steward of the land and its wild inhabitants. Check them out! If you have looked in the mirror lately and viewed recent photographs of our classmates, you will notice that we are all getting "older". Because of my reoccurring flashbacks where I am 22 again, I often describe myself to others as "A 20-something-year old outdoorsman spirit, trapped in an aging, over-fed 70+-year-old body, with a 75-year-old heart (I have some narrowing in my arteries), 108-year-old lungs ( I have COPD), that is in denial about my physical limitations in the wild outdoors. As a result I am usually suffering from multiple strain-related injuries and walking with my walking stick through the woods and swamps like a predator on steroids! Contrary to my large, robust, and "hairy" appearance, I AM NOT A BIGFOOT nor am I a member of the Duck Dynasty Clan. It is truly great to be a Michigan outdoorsman! Please help me reconnect with you through classmates. Stay well and have a great day my friends! Joe Lunkas (The Aging Michigan Outdoorsman)

It is 6 a.m in my area of NW Lower Michigan and light rain is falling. Rain, thunderstorms, and 15 m.p.h winds are forecasted until 11 a.m. This will cause wild turkeys to stay on the roost longer than usual. My plan is to
