Dr. Joseph's Story
Hello fellow Tigers!
I'm proud to be a Carver High Tiger, and, if you would bear with me for just a few moments, I'd like to take you down memory lane and share a few memories with you. As Tyrone Davis would say, "If I could turn back the hands of time". I have awesome memories of playing on the band, although I had to practice really hard to be just an average musician. The people who were really good musicians were my sister, Rose, Kenny and Joyce Cheeks, Sidney "Lurch" Melton, Edna Jeter, Marion Rice, and Tommy Scott.
On occasions I would play hookey and hang out in Phyllis Goins and Tobe Hartwell apartments. Being from the northside, I had a thing for girls that lived on the southside. I was born in Highland Homes and the late Dr. Bull delivered me on July 26, 1951 at Bull's Clinic. As a teenager, I enjoyed my weekend ritual of getting my hair cut at Mr. Joe Patton's Barber Shop and hanging out at Oliver's Pharmacy. Whenever I needed a ride home late at night and it was too far for me to walk home, I could always call Mr. Wilbur Atchison's cab. My most memorable years, however, are the ones I spent growing up "Back of the College". I have so many fond memories of people like Lee Miller, Douglas Level, Robert and Ernest Martin, Gail Dawkins, Huskie Adams, John and Freddie Irby, Larry Turley, Darius Miller, Sandie Kay Jeter, Richar...Expand for more
d Jeter, Stacey Whitmire, Johnny Gist, the Dogans, Mary Linda Foster, Alonzo Bridge, and Douglas Foster. I also remember getting hair cuts from Huskie's dad, Mr. Shorty.
This was my community and these are few of the people and/or families who touched my life. We were all family. My blessings go out to those individuals who are not with us today. I also loved Cummings Street School and TK Gregg Center. I will always be from "Back of the College" first and from Spartanburg second. That's how much my community meant to me.
Presently, I am President/CEO of Ray and Associates Grant Writing Services and Co-Owner/Founder of FDW Productions. I have lived in Columbia SC for thirty-three years. My wife of thirty-two years, Beverly, is a retired educator. She is a native of Long Island, New York. I have two adult children, Christopher and Melanie, and two grandsons, Caden Joseph ( 6 years old), and Ethan Christopher (4 years old). I have a Ph.D. in human services administration. I also teach as an Ajunct Professor at Claflin University, Springfield College (Charleston, SC), and Trident International University(CA). I enjoy being a grand-dad, collecting antiques, swimming, and weight lifting. I'm on Face book as well and would love to reconnect with old classmates. A "Back of the College" reunion would be a great way to reconnect with old friends.
