Joseph's Story
After graduating from Howard University in 1977, I joined the Air Force where I spent 18 years as a public affairs officer in Delaware, New York, California, South Dakota, Turkey and Japan.
During that time I had an opportunity to interact with the news media on a number of ventures and see the aftermath of what happens when people give up and turn their fate over to another human. In this case it was a charismatically flawed man named Jim Jones who went over the edge at a place called Jonestown in the jungles of Guyana. I was at Dover AFB trying to make sense of what happend as Air Force cargo planes unloaded the remains of 911 people -- over 200 of whom were infant children. Needless to say, it left an indelible mark upon all it touched.
Other significant media interfaces included three major aircraft crashes in 1986 and 1988.
I also was involved in the the return of six esacapees from the American Embassy in Iran to the U.S. following the fall of the Shah. When their plane touched down upon American soil there were two people standing there to witness it -- Dover AFB's wing commander and myself.
I also saw firsthand what happens when a country tears itself apart ...Expand for more
through a four-way civil war like the 1980 Turkish civil war and overthrow of that government. 46 million people on lockdown -- no planes took off or landed; no cars, trucks or busses crossed the border; no boats docked; no trains moved. You could not get into the country or out. The military detained 650,000, 230,00 tried in court, 14,000 stripped of citizenship, 50 executed, another 191 died in custody and thousands went missing.
It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, but an incredible journey. Accompanying me on that journey were some of the best of the best in Marv, Smithy, Bro Pete, Chinky, Big John, Sly, Mikee, Woodie, Kerry H., Randy, Daryl G., Mad Jack, Jan, Janet, John K., Kim L., Gary B., Ron, Conrad, Greg W., Sig and Bruce Z.
After retiring from the Air Force I engaged in a multitude of career activities including workforce development, economic development and business attraction activities in Northern California and public affairs activities.
Along the way I met and married the love of my life who gifted me with two precious children, and we also have two fine grandsons.
It's been a fine journey thus far -- am eagerly looking forward to the next chapter.
