Josh's Story

Life Where to start? I joined the Navy after high school as an electronics tech. on a ship in San Diego. After my enlistment ended, I returned to New Mexico to pursue a college degree at UNM. I married a Swede, quit school, went to work at Philips Semiconductor, returned to school when Philips closed, and finished an English degree. Within six months of graduating from college, I turned down two jobs, became a father, and became a law student. My daughter is 18 months old now and I am halfway through law school. Military I went to boot camp in San Diego, then to Orlando for basic electronics training, then to Chicago for advanced electronics training, then to Memphis for aircraft approach radar school. That covers the first two years of my Navy life. After all that training, I reported to my ship, the USS Tarawa, in the Long Beach Naval Shipyard for an overhaul. e exception of the superstructure (or island) jutting up above the flight deck, the Tarawa is as inelegant and ungainly a seafaring craft as ever sailed the Pacific. The flat bottom assured me many nights sleeping in a position known as the sprawl, to keep from rolling out onto the floor. I did get to travel, though. I went to Hawaii three times; Thailand, Singapore, and Jordan twice; and the Philippines, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Djibouti, UAE, and Guam once. I loved San Diego, where the ship was stationed after the overhaul, but could not afford to live there. I grew up somewhere between biking the hills of San Diego and swimming in the Dead Sea. I saw cultures and places of great beauty, staggering poverty, immaculate cleanliness, and unspeakable depravity that I would never have otherwise seen. But if it was so great, why did you leave (you may ask)? Following all the growth and self-discovery, I realized I wanted to do something else. Additionally, military lifers tend to age two years for every calendar year.
