Joy's Story

After Wolfson I went to Furman for two years and then missed Florida and finished at FSU where I roomed with Ginny Smith another Wolfson grad who had also gone to Furman and transfered. I graduated from FSU with a MA in English Creative Writing and then was awarded an Assistantship to work on a Masters Degree in Mass Communications in Public Relations. I had always worked with my Dad summers in his graphic design and advertising business, so I just gravitated this way. After gradating in a terrible job market -- the recession of '75 -- do you all remember that one? -- I was fortunate to find a position with Florida National Banks as Assistant to the Marketing Director for the holding company in Jacksonville. After about a year and a half I went to work for Crowley Maritime as Marketing Services Manager for the Caribbean Division. This involved crazy things like hanging out of helicopters and directing photographers taking photos of cargo barges sailing by El Moro Castle in San Juan. Hard to imagine me doing this, I know. Also, me in a hard hat taking photos on the shipping docks. I had great fun. During this time in 1978, I married my husband, Mike Abney, who was managing partner of a public accounting firm in...Expand for more
Jacksonville. I only worked for about a year after Mike and I were married because we wanted to start a family and I couldn't imagine being pregnant and working, plus trying to keep up with Mike and his two boys. Mike had two children from his first marriage, Michael, Jr. and Ted, who are now 44 and 40. I have three grandchildren from these great boys. Mike and I have been married for 30 years and have one son who is 27 and a Presbyterian minister. Mike is retired now so we are leading a slower pace and enjoying it. Over the years, I did some freelance writing for Jacksonville Magazine covering interior design and the social scene and some community work for the Wolfson Children's Hospital through the Women's Board, Young Life, the Jacksonville Symphony, Cummer, and the Junior League. I worked for Christian Healing Ministries for a few years part time as the Development Director. I have been very involved with several churches over the years that Mike and I have been members of. This work from my heart for the Lord has been my great love. I'm currently working with a ministry as a volunteer that works with adult victims of childhood trauma. I'm hoping to hear from old friends, seeing what you are up to.
