Meanwhile, something tells me that besides April showers bringing May flowers, we can most definitely expect STORMY weather in the days ahead. ________ Apr 4: I so delight in the boisterous talent of late night talk show hosts: Colbert, Stewart, Kimmel, and Fallon – and their wickedly talented staff writers: Who daily focus on the ridiculousness of DJT – and the tiresome banality of his endless lies, uncensored tirades, and bumbling rages. Which brings to mind the ground-breaking comedians of our generation who began to flourish on television by mid-1960's. Improvising and hitting a strong stride by the late-60’s. Who dared to use comedy / satire to challenge not only social mores, but especially floundering politicos & parties. A few a bit more profane in their approach; notably Lenny Bruce, who in the 50’s & 60’s challenged the tolerance of U.S. courts by attacking “the sacred cows” of society… He likely had less of a direct impact on our generation due to his early death in 1966. But he was a catalyst for others, such as: Dick Gregory… George Carlin… Richard Pryor… Stand-out comedians I first noticed were the Smothers Brothers. Who could forget the utterly charming “guilelessness” of Tom and Dickie… The very winsome duo, whose delightful comedy hour made its debut on CBS-Feb 5, 1967. Pioneers to be sure – and champions in challenging the stuffy-staid tv variety show blandness of our parents. Truth be told, no one expected the Smother Brothers to succeed. After all, they were up against “the holy of holies”: THE 9PM Sunday evening slot - and NBC's hugely popular western favorite: Bonanza. A show which had already tanked 9 other attempts by CBS to displace it. But Dick & Tommy surprised everyone – with humor for the mainstream, as well as the younger generation... And just sheer talent! America responded favorably: The show was like a breath of fresh air, appealing to audiences of all ages. But this was a time of intense censorship – especially for television. Major stations all had censor boards which had to preview / approve all scripts / skits... Even guests. But Tom Smothers discovered that he liked pushing boundaries. He found the ever-hovering CBS censors needlessly nitpicky; increasingly, relentlessly intrusive – as did many of the writers on the show. Factor in: Key execs at CBS w/strong ties to people in high places, like Washington DC. Politicians & presidents with zero tolerance for criticism… Especially against the war in Vietnam–ever expanding–with continuing failures / ever-increasing casualties & deaths… Behind the twisted political gamesmanship in DC, Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson was determinedly trying to find a way to END America’s presence in Vietnam. Presumptive GOP candidate Richard Nixon, however, was absolutely committed to BLOCKING American withdrawal for years – until after HE should take office in '69. Johnson was a “lame duck” w/no desire for a second term. Which further emboldened Nixon, who desperately plotted to take credit for ending the war – and could not have cared less about the many young Americans dying daily on Indo-China soil. So Watergate was not Tricky-Dicky’s only UNFORGIVEABLE SIN against U.S. Democracy and its citizens. As the Brothers found their rhythm, they began inviting more “controversial” talent to perform on their show – those known for antiwar views, such as Joan Baez & Pete Seeger. And with writing more volatile commentary. Despite constant turmoil w/CBS censors, Dick Smothers tried to play the peace-maker – but did not succeed. CBS grew tired of Tommy’s challenges to the system. And even more tired of the pressure from DC. Committed to finding an “out” that would enable them to cancel the contract, CBS censors obsessed over the show. Finally, when Tommy failed to provide a weekly script in a timely manner for review prior to airing, CBS found its legal loop-hole – and cancelled the show in its entirety...On April 4, 1969. A coup for CBS & Richard Nixon… A loss, however, for American viewers! CBS executives were relieved; they felt the show was “too controversial” for American prime time – and for some advertisers. The brothers, however, laid a pivotal foundation for other shows to follow. Which indeed, included politicized entertainment–while adding to the debate regarding U.S. involvement in the “war” in Vietnam. Trivia question: Who did the Smothers Brothers sponsor as presidential candidate in 1968? Dwight D. Eisenhower strongly cautioned in Jan. 1961: The conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications… In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. At the time of Eisenhower’s warning, a small contingent of American advisors were already in Vietnam, added towards end of Truman’s presidency (Sept. 1950) when the French still held control over Vietnam. Eisenhower increased that number by 700 military advisors. President Kennedy sent additional military advisors in late 1962 – bringing total to 11,300. Following the Gulf of Tonkin incident (Aug. 2, 1964), Kennedy dispatched an additional 16,000 military troops a few weeks later... Just three months before his assassination in Dallas. The United States, under Pres. Johnson, officially entered the war in Vietnam in March 1965. At which time, a draft was instituted. While Congress approved troop deployment, it never officially issued a Declaration of War against N. Vietnam. By early 1967, there were 490,00 U.S. troops in Vietnam… With the U.S. entering its third year of official combat. The disastrous Tet Offensive (beginning Jan. 30, 1968 through Sept. 22 that same year) was a coordinated series of attacks by N. Vietnam on S.Vietnam cities & outposts. Though U.S. & S.Vietnamese forces managed to hold off the attacks, it shocked the American public – eroding the already failing support for involvement in the “war”. Which had extended into Laos & Cambodia: Critical to the N.Vietnamese supply lines. While Johnson & advisors looked for ways to bring the war to a close - and bring American troops home, president-wannabe Nixon worked behind the scenes – with one of his lackeys in secret contact with N. Vietnam to sabotage any such progress... Until Nixon officially took office in 1969 - when he publicly "manipulated" a withdrawal. Johnson was aware of Nixon’s interference, but thought his V.P. Hubert Humphrey had a strong chance of winning the 1968 election, so decided not to make the issue public. If only LBJ had had the foresight to do otherwise.
