Joyce's Story

Hmmm...How do I catch people up on the past thirty-eight years of my life? That's almost four decades!I will begin with the present because it is the result of the past. I am an educator. In high school I had hopes of being a medical doctor, but Mrs. Burleson convinced me that I was hopelessly inept in mathematics. It wasn't until my early forties while earning a masters in learning disabilities that I discovered that I was, am, and always will be dyslexic. Her devastation to my self concept actually was a blessing in disguise in that I redirected my thoughts toward teaching. I've proven to be a very good teacher, and my profession has brought me a great deal of joy and satisfaction. I am the mother of two. Shastin (named after Kerstin Lofroth the exchange student)is twenty-five and has been married for two years to a wonderful young man she met her sophomore year in high school....Expand for more
Juan Jose will soon be twenty. He is in his second year at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He has aspirations of becoming an immigration lawyer. Both my daughter and my son are fluent Spanish speakers and have dual US and Mexican citizenship. I have Mrs./Senora/Madame Baney to thank for introducing me to foreign languages. French has always fascinated me, but I became passionate about Spanish. Being bilingual has made my life very interesting, to say the least. My mother and sister Nancy live in Midland. I try to visit once a year for a week during the summer. I always forget how verdant and wild Michigan is. Every year in Autumn I become homesick. The crispness of the air, the foliage changing color, hay rides, fresh apple cider...I really do miss it. I would enjoy hearing from old friends and acquaintances. Each of us in our own way is forever young.
