Joyce's Story

Life In 2002 I happily retired from full-time employment and moved from Cleveland, Ohio, to North Carolina where winters are mild and skies are blue on Lake Norman. I still do some freelance graphic design, plus teach knitting and scrapbooking classes, and I admit to being a computerholic. Jim and I have three sons (Mike, Shannon, and Erin) and one daughter (Kelly). Three of our four kids have blessed us with ten grandchildren so far. We've enjoyed exploring North Carolina and LOVE retirement. Life is good! School High school was the greatest back in the 1950s. Didn't we grow up in "the best of times?" As for high school crushes, each new year brought a new one for me, including Larry Arnold, John Sorenson, Bill Keller, and Chips Argeny, to name a few. And I ended up married to my biggest crush, Jim McLeod. The teachers from whom I learned the most were John Peplinski, Elizabeth Behan, Harry Massing, and Esther Bryan. The teacher to whom I gave the most grief was Chet Witkowski (bless him for putting up with us). Fond memories? There are at least a million nesting in my head, but here's a few: walking down State Street after football games, dancing at noonday dances, proms, tris, Y-CO and St. James, hanging out at the Melody Bar with its nickel cokes and penny pretzels, being spanked with a wooden frat paddle in George Kramer's English class, roller skating every Friday night, wearing crinolines soaked in sugar water, playing spin the bottle at Sandy's awesome Halloween parties, signing Sunrise yearbooks every spring, the Boston Store at Christmastime, and the sparkle of Eastcapades. College Even though I spent four years commuting to Edinboro, I didn't get my degree. Instead, I chose to get married and move away from Erie. entered the college scene at Ursuline College in Cleveland. It took me nine years to earn my BA in Business Administration, and I finally graduated in 1995, the same year my son graduated from medical school and my daughter got her MBA. I have to admit that the second time around my college experience was filled with the joy of learning for its own sake, something sadly missing the first time around. Workplace My earliest jobs as a kid were babysitting, picking cherries at Bostwicks in North East, waiting tables at Sweden House, and sweating over hot sheets at Keystone Laundry. My senior year I was hired at Erie Insurance Exchange where I took a lot of shorthand and did a lot of typing (manual, not electric) for the next five years. After marrying Jim, I worked at HRB Singer for a year and GE (jet engines in Cincinnati) for a year. Then I took 14 years off to stay home with my kids. In 1980 I went back to work part-time for six years as a church secretary, both in Rhode Island and Cleveland OH. When our second child entered college, it was time for me to find a full-time job. For five years I worked at Harshaw-Filtrol (chemical company in Cleveland) in HR. Nearly everyone was eliminated when the company was sold, and I found a job with a new headhunting company, Christian & Timbers, where I stayed for eight years. During that time the company grew from 13 employees to over 250 people, and I was able to wear many hats -- secretary to the CEO, controller, systems administrator, and graphic designer. My last job before retiring was with Developers Diversified Realty, a shopping center developer, where my job was exclusively graphic design. It was there I was able to fine tune my skills with design layout, photography and multimedia software while creating ads, fliers, brochures and posters.
