Juan's Story
Life is too short !
After so many years of ups and downs,I am finally started opening up a lot. Is not that my life was closed, but I was like in a silence of my own.
In high school I only had a couple of friends, in my neighborhood I had a couple of friends also. I lived in a 99.9 % jewish neighborhood, my family at the time were the only spanish people in the block, the streets were crowded with kids playing stick ball, football and roller hockey everyday in the summer months. Summers were really hot in the city those days, that you could fry an egg on the streets of New York city, the winters were severe also, they were so cold that the temperatures at night and sometimes in the day time were below zero. It used to snow a lot those days too, the snow used to cover all the cars, i remember one winter the schools were closed for almost one week because of the snow problem in the whole city, that even people died inside the cars when they got stocked up in the Van wyck expressway in jamaica, queens in the winters of 67, and 68 if i'm not wrong.
I remember the kids in my block on Lowe court and 149 street, in Jamaica queens, They would not allowed me to play stick ball with them. I would stand around to be pick for the next game, but they ignored me like i was a ghost, or an invisible person. I never complained, I used to lean over by a car, or seat on the curb on the street and watch them play. They never talked to me, or made faces at me, but they just igno...Expand for more
red me, like I was not there. They new I was not jewish, even though i looked like some of them: I was white, not short, with straigh hair and green eyes, and the rest of my family were like that too, some of us even had blue eyes. But, I did not wear a Yamulka, that was it !! So, time went by until one day, this jewish girl,I guess was curious to know who I was, approached me, said hello and asked my name. Wow ! That changed everything. All of the sudden some of the guys in the block were kind of resentful towards me, but never cursed, or disrespected me in any other way but ignoring me, and I guess spoke behind me, some of them confronted the girl for talking to me. I guess she told them off and became my friend anyway, she was strong and sure of herself, more madure than those guys and was coming from a very educated family, her parents were teachers, and her sisters were college students and tall to defend her just in case, but these Jewish guys were not bullies, just kind of young ignorant and stupid, they were prejudice againt me, but I did not care about it, I had a mind of my own. This did not affected me in any way because I was not resentful against anybody. I came from a Catholic, respectful family. I was kind of happy go lucky Kid!A so called:
Low key guy (quiet).
This is a cute story, kind of a West side story, that happened to me around the time when I went to Jamaica H.S. I wanted to share with some of the people in this group graduates of 1969.
