Juan's Story

Life - as of 2007 - After Roosevelt, I became a Marine from 86 to 90. After all those Rambo movies, I was assigned to be a Cryogenics Technician. Assigned because I was so hot to join, I went open contract. Kids, don't try that at home. Have you even heard of Cryo? Me neither. Basically I worked with liquid oxygen and nitrogen. I married Marie Puente, my high school sweetheart and divorced her in that time frame. We had no children, much to my regret. I remarried in 91. All I can say is I was in California, have you seen California girls? I told her how beautiful East Chicago was and we moved back home. The first year we were there, we set all kinds of records for cold weather. The second year, we the most snow in recorded history. I don't think she will ever forgive me. I thought it was funny, no? From 91 to 01 I did nothing but bounce from job to job while I went to Purdue part time. Oh yea, I had a few kids too. I finished school in 2001, it almost killed me. After pursuing an electrical degree for 11 years, I got a job because of a certificate program I did at Purdue for a couple of semesters in Computer Aided Drafting. That led to other jobs, in mechanical engineering, of all things. I designed cardboard boxes and plows, or harrow discs to you farm boys. I am currently working as a Design Engineer designing industrial robotics / process automation machines on a long term project in Dallas, TX. Who woulda thunk it? My electrical training coupled with my CAD experience uniquely positions me in the robotics arena, since everybody is going to the "Mechatronics" model. ROBOTS BABY! Not baby robots, this thing is 5 stories high 500 feet long and moves a 20,000 pound load. I would say more, but I signed a non-disclosure agreement. After signing enlistment and divorce papers you would think I would learn. I have 3 kids, all of them teenagers now. They are 15, 14, and 13. I was in a hurry ok? They are the joy of my life. I had to say that, they might read this one day. A special shout out to Cathy, you know who you are. Good Lord, I am 40 years old. At least I dont look as old as Leo Serros, nor as ugly as Mike Alverez. LOL just kidding guys. A special hello to Mrs. Dalhoumi who's passion for teaching science taught me to believe I can. And to Mr. Lopez who is the best math teacher I ever had, and I had plenty. To great teachers! salud - 2009 update - Holy cow this recession sucks! My giant robot was outsourced and I have no job. I think its time for my second divorce as well. Any single women out there have a line on a job? Marriage sucks, or I do. No fair asking Marie. Kids are 17 16 and 15. I can't believe my oldest will graduate high school this year. I don't think ...Expand for more
I like Texas. I might move to California again. I was happy there once. Happier than I have been anywhere else. Maybe by April. Roadtrip! 2008 was bad, can '09 get worse? I am afraid to ask. <Late 2009 update> Me and my big mouth. Things got considerably worse. I am back in DA REGION picking up my Masters in Technology. If I keep polishing that brain one day its gonna shine. I arrived with pretty much what I could carry and no cash. Hehe. Anywhere on the planet in 36 hours. It was never promised in what condition. My brother's mother-in-law took me in. I do chores and live rent free. So far so good. My old professor gave me a car to use for free for 4 months. Say that fast 10 times, "for free for four months." What more do you want? Its time to collect these updates and make the story current. Hit me up, we can kick back a few and reminisce about terrible old times. Wanna contact me? I am at joshua221atcalientemail (microsoft site) you know the rest. If you don't your scary and dangerous, and you shouldn't contact me anyways. Military - USMC It was a cold November day in 1986. MCRD San Diego in San Diego CA was a big place and lonely. I was excited and scared. They fixed that. It was sleep depravations and just dead tired. Dammed footprints. What can I tell you that hasn't been told and better. I did three months of bootcamp. After that I went to Naval Air Station Memphis in Millington TN for Basic Electrical & Electronics in February of 1987. Then months on end (3) of barracks support waiting for my class to open up at my next school. Off for 3 months to MCAS Cherry Point in Havelock NC in May of 1987 for my final school, Cryogenic Equipment Technician. Met some interesting guys and realized it was not going to be longterm for me. It is a field that is short of people, so we are allowed no moves out of it. From there it was a cross country hike to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in El Toro CA in August of 1987 . One month of On the Job Training and bam, I am ready to tread water till November of 1990. Somewhere along the way I became a member of the Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare Monitor and Survey Team. Means I went out and tested for bad stuff and reported back. My favorite part of the manual was to select the lowest ranking team member that was most dispensible and have them unmask and observe them for any ill effects. I graduated top of my class to make myself a little less "dispensible". I was always glad to welcome the younger Marines to the unit after that. I picked up four promotions in two years. Then they froze promotions and I didnt get any more. I got out as a Corporal, E-4 in September of 1990. Then back to East Chicago where it all began.
