Judith's Story
After graduating from UMASS Amherst in 1964, I began my career of teaching in Stoneham. I never had thought of being a teacher growing up, but after being on the College Fashion Board in Jordan Marsh, I was told by a buyer that it was best to take a liberal arts course in college, as learning to be a buyer would be taught to an individual at their place of work. Thus began my long journey in the field of education.
I began at South School, a small(9 teachers) school which was very disciplined. I found the job to be challenging, requiring a lot of work, but the satisfaction one received from imparting knowledge to young children, is in itself very rewarding.
After 4 years of teaching in this school, two women I had become very friendly with were planning to marry. Since I didn't wish to marry early in my life, I decided to leave teaching to work at Eastern Airlines as a Flight Attendant.I did my training in Miami Springs Villa,FL, and then was based in Boston. I found that after having had a stable salary and a structured work schedule in teaching, that being a Flight Atte...Expand for more
ndant long term was not for me. I left in less than a year after taking a lengthly trip to Mexico.
I didn't work for a while thinking of what career I might try next. As my supply of money was dwindling, I decided to go back into teaching. I worked in Stoneham for 36 years teaching 2nd, 3rd, and 6th grades. I also had the experience of being Head Teacher for 8 of those years. I finally completed my courses for a masters degree when I was 55.
My passion in life has been traveling. I have been to about 20 states, but have also traveled extensively in Europe and have been to all the islands in the Eastern and Western Caribbean,Yugoslavia, and Turkey. This April I went to Ireland, and was very surprised about their high standard of living.
I never did settle on one person to share my life with. As it goes, the ones who wanted to marry me were not the ones I wanted to marry. I have been fulfilled in my life and feel positive about the choices I have made.
Life is moving very quickly now, so it is time to do everything I have ever wanted to do. That is where I am at present!!
