Judith's Story

I always tell my 2nd grade students to start at the beginning, then tell the middle, then the end. So... Right after graduating in 1963, I stayed home and kept an eye on my Grandma for a couple of years. When she went into the nursing home, I went to San Diego City College and became a broadcaster (Radio/TV Arts). I took my AA degree and worked at Channel 10 for about 3 years. Another year working as an apartment manager, and I opted for the reliable paychecks offered by the U. S. Army. My Army career lasted for 8 years of active duty, and many more years in the Reserves. I was lucky enough to get all expenses paid, extended visits to Monterey, CA, Indianapolis, IN, Augusta, GA, and the Netherlands, and Germany. Loved it. Traveled all over. Started out a PFC, and left active duty a Captain in the Signal Corps. Found unsuspected strength in my body and spirit, and grew up. Met, married and divorced one soldier, then met and married a civilian from Sacramento. Left active duty when I got pregnant, moved to Sacramento, and started my next quest. After my daughter was born, I went back to school. I had a specific goal of becoming a teacher, but had to complete a Bachelor's first, so I worked hard and earned a BBA. Then, my University opened a teacher training program. I jumped on it, and got that credential as an elementary teacher. Age discrimination does exist, and there were no jobs to be had in California. Substitute teaching, lots of it, but no classroom of my own. Along came the internet, and a job offer from the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe in Nevada. Talk about culture shock! The nearest grocery store was 73 miles away, the high school was in another county, over 37 miles of dirt road, and the place was 20 miles from the nearest state highway, 2 hours from the nearest Walmart, and 4 hours from a city of any size. I was hired on by the public school system the next year, and...Expand for more
moved to the extremely small town of Gabbs, 30 miles in one direction to Highway 95, 30 miles in the other direction to Highway 50, but only 37 miles from Ichthyosaur State Park, and only 2 hours from Reno. From there I moved 7 hours south to the healthy and growing town of Pahrump. Since Nevada has only 1 school district per county, and Pahrump and Gabbs are both in Nye County, it was considered a transfer. I've been at the same school for 8 years now. I have not, however, stopped moving. I've taught 1st, 4th, and 2nd grades at this school, and I've changed classrooms 9 times! Over the summer, the district is tearing my 1960's era classroom down and installing a double classroom on the site, which means that all my stuff has to go back in my garage. I have way too many books for my students to read, and far too many science supplies and accessories that I use with my kids for my garage to be large enough. What a change from when I was in the Army, and could move me and all my stuff in my Datsun. One thing I love to do with my students is art. I even found a good website which features student art from all over the world, and I've been putting my students' work on the site for two years now. All my life experiences and adventures have led me to some inescapable conclusions. -Everyone is about as happy as they decide to be. -You have to like yourself before you can like anyone else. -No matter how bad your situation is, it can and sometimes will get worse. -No matter how bad your situation is, you can live through it. -What goes around comes around, and is, if you are lucky enough to know when it comes around, mighty satisfying to watch. -Getting old is a bear, but better than the alternative. -If you don't believe in miracles, you aren't paying attention. And, there is a bit of God in everyone, so treat them accordingly. I love connecting with old friends on FaceBook, so look me up!
