Judith's Story

Life Alot has happened since we left high school. I spent several years traveling and living in different states. I've lived in Texas, Utah, Nevada and California. I moved to California in 1983. I worked with Bank of America in California for almost 10 years. I was there in the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. Believe me, it was a shaking experience. When the company dowsized for the 3rd time, I lost my benefits and retirement. My family had wanted me to come home for many years, so I decided to take advantage of the situation and come back to Mississippi to be near my family. I came home in 1993. I met my husband William (Bill) Berhow in late 1994 and we were married 6 months later in April of 1995. We will celebrate our 12th anniversary this month. We were unable to have any children of our own, so we lavish our love on the unfortunate animals that have been lost or abandoned. We have rescued and raised quiet a few animals over the years. We currently have 6 four legged children. They need almost as much love and care as a human child does. In 1994, I joined the Ramsey Springs Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter/first responder. It was at a meeting that I became reaquainted with an old high school classmate. We have actually know each other since elementary school and continue our friendship to this day. I have been a member of the Stone County Fire Service for the last 13 years. Over the last few years, I have been unable to use my firefighting skills due to the degenerative arthritis in my back, feet and ankles, that I've developed over the last several years. Therefore, I continue to serve the fire department and it's community as the Secretary and Treasurer. I have been Co-Chairperson to the Stone Co. Firefighters Association. I also help with any fund raisers that the fire department has and continue to give advice and guidance to the current firefighting members. Early in our relationship, Bill got tired of me leaving him at a moments notice ...Expand for more
to go to a fire or accident so, he also decided to join the fire department. He has been Chief of the Ramsey Springs Fire Department for several years and just this year decided to turn over the reigns to some younger and upcoming firefighters. I was a 911/Emergency Medical Dispatcher for several years with Stone, George and Harrison Counties. After a while, I decided that I wanted to make a change and not have the pressures of life or death situations. Although I am proud of knowing that I was responsible for saving the lives of a number of people. It does give you a good feeling to know that you've helped someone even in the smallest of ways. Sometimes just being there to listen can make a big difference to someone. One of the most memorable for me was a man that was going to commit suicide. I was able to talk to him and get him the help that he needed. The preacher I sent came back and told me that the man said that the only thing that kept him from ending his life was the sound of my voice. How great is that. I am currently working with a well known Podiatrist on the coast. I have been a Clinical/Surgical/Clerical Assistant with him for 2 1/2 years. I am learning to be an Animal Care Specialist in the hopes of working with animals of all kinds or at least to better care for my own. Sometimes it's difficult to know what you want to do in life, especially when there are so many choices. I knew that I wanted to help people and I believe that I've accomplished that in a number of areas in my life. I do wish that I had discovered my love for animals sooner. I believe that I would have chosen a profession in the animal field. Now that I physically have trouble walking, my choices are limited. So, I will continue to rescue and raise animals and do the best I can to help anyone that I can. I'm sure that we can all look back and wish that we had done some things differently, but as long as we have tried to do our best, then we have all been successful in life.
