Judy's Story
I'm married (22 yrs to Glen) & have 3 sons (Travis: 30, Alan: 27 &
Brian: 20). We're currently living in Sunnyvale CA, but we own a home in Marana AZ.
I've been disabled and home-bound from severe chronic pain for more than 15 years. It has been a difficult transition cuz before my condition got so bad that I could no longer work, I had just been promoted into a job that was created for me to utilize my most technical skills. I provided support to a group of 40 scientists, doing everything from managing their calendars to preparing presentations for their work for talks, etc. I also provided computer support to other administrative staff as well as some of the scientists. I loved my work so much that I was working about 60-80 hrs/wk on top of parenting my sons and maintaining our house, etc.
Being stuck in bed most of the time kept me depressed for quite a while, but I in 2002 I went for a quick ride on my husband's new motorcycle. I learned quickly that somehow riding the bike lessened my pain substantially while I am on the bike. So, in 2003 I got my first street bike, a used 250cc Honda Nighthawk. It was a good bike to start on (I had a couple of dirt bikes when I was in high school, but hadn'...Expand for more
t ridden anything in more than 20 years), but it didn't have a windshield or any storage, and it was hard pressed to go any faster than about 70. After I got my motorcycle endorsement for my license at the DMV, I got my 2nd bike, a used 600cc Honda Shadow VLX. It was a beautiful bike, and had a nice windshield, custom leather saddlebags, and a speed-shifter. It was fun to ride, but didn't really meet my needs. My husband and I like touring on our bikes (his is an 1800cc Goldwing), and I wanted something with lots of storage and an engine capable of keeping up with the Goldwing on the highway (the VLX topped out at about 85). In June of 2003, I got a Suzuki Burgman 400 super scooter. I chose that bike mainly because of the huge amount of built-in storage and can go up to about 100mph so it has no problem keeping up with my hubby on his bike. Plus, it gets up to 75 miles/gallon. I put nearly 50,000 miles on it before selling it in early 2006 and getting a new one, the one shown in my profile pic.
Since getting my new bike, I have ridden it from San Jose to Lake Vermilion in northern MN and back, as well as many other 2-3 day rides. It is my primary transportation...even for trips to the grocery store!
