Judy's Story

Life I married Russell Browning in 1967, moved to Hermiston, OR for a minute, Russ's draft notice arrived the day we returned from honeymoon, back to LG for 13 mo., on to APG, MD for 2 years. Next came KFalls, OR where Russ continued college and went to work for Columbia Plywood where he worked for 33 years. I had various retail jobs, yarn dept. manager, taught knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, crewel, and counted x-stitch classes, jewelry store clerk, semi-precious bead stringer, pearl restringing, most recently taught quilt classes. Way back when, I was even 'published' when I won a prize in a x-stitch pattern contest, who knew? The most important job, of course, was raising our son, Matt, who is now 27 and living in Seattle, working for ShareBuilder.com as call center manager. We were fortunate in being able to take time off for Choir trips and BSA skiing trips. Matt is an Eagle Scout and an accomplished piano player. I chaired the committee that founded the Wildlife Open in 1992 and then for 9 more years before retiring from the job. It is a couples golf tournament the 3rd weekend of September at Reames Golf & Country Club that draws couples from WA, CA, ID, OR, NV, AZ, and VA the last I knew. It's a great tournament, based on having a good time, so if you are interested, call Reames and inquire. 1-541-884-6531 In 2000, I was co-chair for the OR State PEO convention,(a Philanthropic Educational Org. that provides scholarships for women). That was so much fun. I met so many new people and found a few old ones, too. Last April, Russ and I retired and moved to Sparks, NV where the temp. is a mite warmer, the airport more convenient and the area is booming. We joined Red Hawk Golf Resort and golf most days. The people are very friendly and we love it here. Russ joined the Reno Jaguar Club and wha...Expand for more
t do you know, more fun people. We all recently were able to go to Burbank and be in the Jay Leno audience. Afterwards, Jay gave us a personal tour of his car/motorcycle collection. What a nice guy. You can't help but like him when you meet him. Russ was excited to find Jay has a car built around the same kind of tank engine he worked on in VNam, they had quite a discussion about the changes Jay had made in the engine. We received a gift of golfing at Pebble Beach for Russ's retirement, and went there this sping. That day it rained .95" but I played the whole round when many guys gave up. Considering my level of play, I did OK. In addition to golfing, I quilt. We have several ladies who quilt in the area and we get together every month to compare our projects. We have done a lot of short distance traveling this last year and have had a wonderful house-sitter, Erin Pitts. Erin is Rolfe and JoAnne Pitts' daughter and Pam (Pitts) DuVall's niece. She is working on her doctorate at UNR and it is so much fun having her in the area. Last month, May 2005, Russ and Matt jumped out of an airplane at 13,000 above the ground. That was quite a thrill. Russ's tandem partner was a young man with ratty dreadlocks named Chance who jumped in shorts! When asked, he told Russ he'd made about 5000 jumps and turned out to be the head of the operation. Matt's partner had been arrested a few months ago when attempting to base jump off Mandalay Bay. We got terrific pictures from the wrist camera the guys wore. Well there are a few highlights, nothing earth shattering or history making, but we are still here, so who knows? Life is what you make of it and we are having fun and enjoying retirement. Hope to do so for a long time. Call us if you are in the area, we'd love to hear from any of our classmates.
