Judy's Story
Hi there, remember David Hutchinson from our class??? He too is in Washington and that's him in the pix with me. . and here's my story . .
I am once again living in Spokane, WA which is where I was born (my family's roots). We had moved to CA when I was 8 and my Dad came back after I graduated with my 2 younger siblings. I have been back and forth between here and CA ever since. The grass is yet to grow under my feet. But I'm single with no children and pretty much get up and go when the desire strikes.
Professionally, up until January '09, I have been working in an office as an executive/administrative asst. I took some college courses here and there, but "never really knew what I wanted to do when I grew up." At the same time, I wanted a new career path badly, but between the fear of going back to school as a "seasoned" adult, and not really knowing what path to take, I just stayed within that little safety net called a "cubicle".
The bottom line, that safety net wasn't so safe anymore. With these jobs becoming more and more obsolete, be it the economy or other circumstances, not only were they not available, layoffs were a common occurrence, many of which I was a victim. Having said that, I decided it was time to face my fears and go to college. Something that helped me make my decisio...Expand for more
n was an office assignment I had in a non-profit organization in Oceanside last summer (Welcome Home Ministries). They helped women coming out of prison get back into the "real" world and on the right path. Alot of these women had not even finished school, but after prison, got there GED and enrolled in college. It was their enthusiasm and accomplishments that opened my eyes. At that point, I truly felt if they could do it coming from their past, I certainly didn't have an excuse not to do it. I based my decision not only on what I have a passion for, but market demand. Having been a caregiver to several family members and friends over the years, including my very special Daddy, I chose the medical field. In January, I began an accellerated program for Medical Assistant at DeVry College (a 2 yr. program done in 9.5 months) and love it! I never thought learning and challenging myself could be so rewarding. The only regret I have is that I didn't do it sooner. But I'm doing it now and am a true testimonial that it's never too late! It's full-time, quite intense and technical, plus 20 or so hours of homework a week, but well worth it, and the best part is, much to my surprise, I'm getting all A's and B's. Yeah!!!
That's my story, thanks for the read, look forward to seeing everyone in October!
