Judy's Story
Life
After ISU, I taught for 35 years.Started out teaching music--didn't like it--switched to English. Continued to sing professionally in Indy with my own band called the Indy Five, but after DJs and Karaoke emerged we broke up. I did solo work until Nov '99. I sing occasionally in Terre Haute with the Easy Street Band. I am involved in many things, but one of my favorites is tap dancing.
I retired from teaching in 1997. I have one son, who graduated from Lawrence Central and Butler and lives in Denver, Co. My first husband is dead. We were md for 23 years. I was md to my second husband for 10 years, but in Nov '99 he decided we should get a divorce. I came back to TH, my home town, to get away from him and moved into my childhood home. Both husbands were musicians. I lived in or near Indy for 40 years and commuted to Lebanon HS where I finished my teaching career. I emulated Ms Kearns--I taught BritLit to honors students. I also taught etymology. I loved teaching until about 1995 and then I was just tired and beginning to feel obsolete. I was spending more time on required paperwork than on teaching.
Both parents are dead. My brother James lives in Littleton, CO., md w/4 children and 4 grandchildren. His hair and eyebrows are totally white. My wonderful sister Janic...Expand for more
e is a full professor of Communications at SMWC and very active in the theatres here. I'm glad to be home. I loved living in Indy, but now I love living here! To be honest, I didn't give much thought to Wiley for all those years. I've just begun to appreciate it, and along with it, the city of Terre Haute--a much better place than I remembered.
In February 2005 I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy and radiation. My lump was sent to San Francisco for tests (I sent my lump to San Francisco--sing it!) and it was determined that on a scale of 1-100 for possible recurrence, I am a 9. I'm taking an experimental drug, because of which I'm being monitored carefully. No problems so far.
I'd like to hear from former students and classmates.
Update 12/8/2009
On January 10 of 2009 I was again diagnosed with breast cancer--different breast, different cancer. I had another lumpectomy and this time I had to have chemo and radiation both. I spent a miserable year. Only in the last month have I recovered all my energy--I feel fine now. My hair is still on its way back. I became very fond of bandannas over the summer.
I'm trying to catch up on things that I had to let go when I was so ill, so I'm not doing much else. Looking forward to the new year.
