Judy's Story

Originally from Brooklyn, I moved to Valley Stream, Island Park and then, just before 10th grade, to Long Beach. I have lived in Southern California (San Fernando Valley in the L.A. area) since 1962, the year after high school. I am recently widowed, and although my husband, Arthur and I met out here, he was originally from Brooklyn, too (East New York Vocational High School, Class of '53). I have one daughter, Irene (54), who is single and a realtor. I retired in 1998, after a 32-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, (starting in mail processing and ending in an administrative position). An achievement that afforded me a steady, secure income with good benefits (then and now), I consider my greatest achievement my daughter, who is beautiful (inside and out), compassionate, honest, socially-conscious, has great values and makes me proud every day. Although we are few in number now (my parents and siblings are gone), family is (and always has been) most important to me (after health). My great-nephew, Wyatt (age 11), is like a grandchild to me and brings me great joy....along with bragging rights! There's nothing like experiencing life through the eyes of a child (especially one you love and adore)! ...Expand for more
As for my interests, I have always loved theatre (particularly musical theatre) and spent a summer (between my junior and senior years) in summer stock (in Maryland). I was also in a little theatre group which met at Long Beach High, and in 2 local productions (in Long Beach). I love music of many genres, but Broadway show music is my passion and I listen to it every day. I also love, love, love cats (I have 2)! Since retiring, I have spent the greater part of my time caring for ill aging parents and a seriously-ill husband, so I have had little time to really enjoy retirement. For a while I was involved in a very rewarding project I am passionate about: feeding the homeless on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. I hope to get back to volunteering in the near future, as well as getting back to life in general, and pursuing other interests I have had to put on hold, due to family circumstances and commitments. I am blessed, thankfully, with good health and great friends (on both coasts). I am very active, energetic (always on-the-go), love the outdoors and take advantage of the wonderful, temperate climate we enjoy here in Southern California. I do miss the seasons back East, but not the snow and bitter cold!
