Judy's Story

Life -- My husband and I live about 3 miles from the ocean in Southern California, and I have now lived longer in SoCal than I've lived in the Quad Cities. Not sure how I feel about that fact since I still love and miss my hometown. Yet, living where I do in sunny CA, it's hard to dislike an area where a person can walk on a beach in the morning and hike a mountain trail in the afternoon since both are within an hour from one another. Not that I do much mountain hiking, but they are majestically sitting there if the need should arise. I do get to see my share of beautiful sunsets, swaying palm trees, ocean surf, mountainous skylines, and some of the best weather in the U.S. it's also possible for a person to plan an outdoor event 6 months in advance and know the weather's gonna be good for it. But as I said, I still miss "home," the Mississippi River, the friendliness of the Midwest, the good restaurants with the best pizza in the country, and I sure do miss the "green" of the Quad Cities (SoCal is kind of brown for the most part). I even find myself missing the snow and cold, which I'm sure is only because I haven't really experienced it in 38 years. We occasionally deal with snow when we travel in our RV, but I haven't lived in it for a long time, so I'm sure my memories are tinged more with nostalgia than the actual reality of dealing with snow. Guess that's the benefit of long-ago memories, right? Retirement -- After working in the aerospace industry, my husband and I are now happily retired. It's great to no longer endure the workday commute in heavy traffic, which is the bane of almost every working Californian. Since the both of us worked at the same place, we were blessed to be able to carpool to work. As a rule, no one here seems to live in the same city where they work, so the daily commute is a real factor in a person's mental health. And because of the never-ending traf...Expand for more
fic, we tend to measure travel distances in "time" rather than "miles." But back to our retirement, we have an RV (Class A), which we have used quite a bit to drive the highways and byways of America. We try to take a 2-1/2 month trip each fall and drive wherever our interest takes us. On one particular trip, we traveled only 35 miles before something caught our eye and we stopped for the day. Of course, we always include a trip to the QC in our travels -- I have to get my pizza fix in. Let me just say, there are no great pizza joints in SoCal. It's amazing to me that out of 39 million people in CA, no one knows how to make a decent pizza out here! Anyway, while in the old neighborhood, we visit my old haunts, and I narrate for my husband the history behind a certain place. He's from New Jersey and unfamiliar with the Midwest, but he's very patient and tolerant of my wanderings. But when I see him getting glassy-eyed over my endless remembrances, I drag him over to the Arsenal. He's a retired Marine. You cannot take the military out of a career Marine, so it works for us to go to the Island and look around. By the way, there are a lot of interesting things to see if you haven't been over there recently. School -- So, I am one of those people that really loved high school and all that it entailed -- the community locker with friends, attending school games, dancing at the Cow Palace, finding Biology "dissection parts" in the school typewriters and lockers, skipping class to go eat at the Ice Cream Palace, being on the yearbook staff, passing notes back and forth (all of which I still have), and the thousands of other great memories I have of those years. Thank you to the people who helped to make those 4 years so very, very memorable for me. Of course, I had my share of heartaches and troubles, as we all did, but I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else than at UTHS. Go Panthers!
