Judy's Story
Life
After graduating in 1970, I attended WMU for 2 years. In 1972 I married Jim Hagey (Buchanan class of 1969) and I started working full-time at The Upjohn Co. in their International Division. I later got my associates degree in Secretarial Science from Kalamazoo Valley Community College and received my Certified Professional Secretary ranking in 1982. In 1983, my son, Sean, was born. He attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco he is currently an Executive Chef in Park City, UT. Sean got married in March 2011, but has since divorced and moved to Portland, OR. I was divorced in 1997. Over my 33 years of employment, I've seen mergers and acquisitions take place in the pharmaceutical industry. My position as data administrator and part of the administrative team for product and API (active pharmaceutical ingredients) sourcing survived the first 2 mergers (with Pharmacia and then with Monsanto/Searle). However, with Pfizer's acqusition of Pharmacia, my...Expand for more
job moved to New Jersey. Although my new boss wanted me to move to NJ, I decided that after 33 years of dedicated service, I deserved a severance package and to not work (at least for a while). After a few years of full retirement, I started working part-time (3 hours/day) in the Parks & Recreation Dept. for the City of Portage. When they moved the Parks Dept. to the DPS building (due a merge with Streets & Equipment), my job was eliminated. I then transferred to Employee Development (4 hours/day). In December 2014 the city promoted me, but I'm still part-time. I continue to live in Portage, MI and am on my condominum's Landscape Committee. In 2011 I joined the Kalamazoo Community Chorale. It is a great group of women, and I am enjoying the music as well as serving on the Board, including President 2014-2016. In 2012 I got my second golden retriever puppy, Grace. I'm hoping to eventually train her as a therapy dog in order to take her to nursing homes and hospitals.
