Judy's Story

I did my undergraduate work at Morris Harvey, after the first two years at WVU. My first job was in the State Planning Office for the state of West Virginia. After that I focused my career on working in small non-profits in the Charleston area and several rural counties in the state. During those years I had two sons and spent many hours working on a graduate degree at the West Virginia College of Graduates Studies - anyone else remember it? After completing 49 graduate hours, I admitted to myself that social work and I were not meant for one another. In 1985 I moved to Lexington and started working on a Master¿s in Library and Information Science at UK which I received in 1985. But I did not take a position in the field when I finished. Instead I was offered a program position at the medical center where I had been working as a graduate assistant. The position involved providing information services to two federally funded grant programs. Since I had worked in non-profits writing and securing grant funding in the small WV non-profits, it was a logical fit. Soon I was the program administrator for one of the programs. In 1996, because of the cold Kentucky rainy winters, we decided to move south. We came to Jacksonville, where I started working at the community college which last year became a four-year college - Florida State Coll...Expand for more
ege at Jacksonville. Also, I spent five years at Jacksonville University as the Director of Foundation Relations. JU, which I love, sits on a river and reminded very much of Morris Harvey - only with more land and trees. I am a big fan of small private colleges even though I work for a very big state school. Now I am working as a librarian at the Florida State College and as an online instructor. I love being in higher education and working with students and faculty. Every day I get the pleasure of feeling like I have really helped someone. My husband is a computer network specialist for the local school district and works in the field a lot. I plan to work until either my mind or body fails. For me, for years, retiring is not a consideration. I enjoy working too much. MY PHOTO. In case you look at my photo and go ¿WHAT UP WITH THIS?¿ . . . my interpretation. I am a photographer and when I photograph people, I look for the essence of the person. This photo is more me than a smiling one. I¿m serious about questioning the world and looking for answers - factual and spiritual. (Hey, gang, wasn¿t I serious in high school? Too serious!) Smiling faces are for the benefit of others. I smile a lot. It is good for the body and the soul. It makes others feel better too. But in my still presence, in the deep part of me . . . this is me.
