Judy's Story
Life
My beloved partner, Jennifer, and I have been together for nearly 20 wonderful years. We moved to Humboldt County in 2001 and truly love it here among the redwoods on the North Coast. I am on permanent disability for fibromyalgia and degenerative disc/joint disease. Jennifer works full-time as the Lifestyle editor for the local daily newspaper.
Birding became a hobby when we first moved to the Sonoma County countryside. We are loving learning about shore birds here on the North Coast and have a particular passion for pelicans. It's fun to watch them suddenly nosedive into the water to catch their dinner.
Our volunteer activities have been with wildlife rehab organizations -- we are very fond of raccoons in particular. While living in a country setting in Sonoma County, we offered the use of our old, empty chicken coop as a "half-way house" for releasing rehabed raccoons back into the wild. One very young raccoon, Luna, had been found abandoned by her mama and was raised by humans. She was a sweet little creature with absolutely no guile. She lived with us for a month before we released her from the coop. As we had hoped, she teamed up with Rounder, a mellow older mama raccoon that was part of the wild group of moochers (raccoons, opossums...Expand for more
and skunks) that regularly showed up at our back door for snacks every evening. Rounder taught Luna the raccoon survival skills she needed to survive in the wild. Luna learned her lessons well and went on to have a happy, "wild" life. She still visited us occassionally for the next three years until we moved north. And she did bring her first litter of four babies to meet us the summer before we left!
Even though we bought a house "in town" here in Humboldt County, our lot is backed by the city limit and a greenbelt ravine, thus allowing for nightly visits by local wildlife. We still put out snacks for our furry friends every evening and have enjoyed the company of raccoons, opossums, skunks, feral cats and even two foxes!
Our "children" are all furbabies. We adopted Kasti, an Italian Greyhound/terrier mix, from a small dog rescue organization in '98. She's dark brindle, weighs about 14 lbs. (thinks she's a 140 lb. Rottweiler), and is a pistol one minute and a precious fawn the next. Buddy (a.k.a. Doofus T. Dribbles) - the "baby boy" cat - adopted us last spring (2009). He showed up in our yard one day and, once petted, he never left. He is a relaxed, trusting, sweet cat -- a nice counterbalance to Kasti's sometimes overbearing terrier madness.
