Hans-Juergen's Story

Life after high school; I attended Lear Siegler Institute, graduated in the top 10% of my class as an IBM Systems Programmer. On graduation day, I returned to my homeland of Germany for the first time in 13 years. While on vacation in Germany, I was drafted in to US Army. On my return to the states I entered the Army and was sent away for a year and half of intensive training followed by a deployment to Vietnam. It was only 14 years earlier that my family was given the opportunity to leave Germany and immigrate to the United States of America. I was not yet a US citizen but a registered alien, when I was transferred to the Republic of South Vietnam in 1970. I was a kid on a new adventure. During my tours of duty I saw and experienced things that would be with me the rest of my life. When I returned home in 1971 was a no longer an adventurous kid, but combat hardened veteran with no idea what was to come next. In 1972 I began putting my life back together by first becoming a US citizen. I took the oath at the Department of Immigration and naturalization in Baltimore, Md. Later that year I re-entered the United States Army. In 1975 I attended college in Columbia, Mo. I continued my Army career mostly stationed in Germany and retired from the Army 1990. I studied at Florida International University, and University of Maryland, Heidelberg Campus as well as Columbia College, Mo. During my life in Germany I was able to get back to my roots getting to know my German family. I believe it import to know who you are and where you're from. After retiring from the US Army, I was offered a position with the US Government in Heidelberg, Germany as the Information Management Officer. I managed the office in Heidelberg until 1997 when I accepted a job with Loyola University as Manager, Client Systems. I am proud to say that in all of my years away from home, I managed to attend all but one of the Beall High reunions. After 19 years in Germany, we came back to Maryland in July of 1997. We bought a house just north of Baltimore. I am married with 3 children, Anja, Brian, and Christian. Anja is a graduate of Hood College.. She moved to Seattle, Wa. in May of 2001. In June 2008, Anja was accepted to Western Washingon University and began studies for an MBA. In August 2010 she received her MBA. The same year, Anja became a certified project manager. In 2011 Anja and her husband Jake moved back to the east coast to live closer to us. They recently bought a house 4 miles from us. Brian left the Navy in January 2008 to comple...Expand for more
te his under graduate degree at the University of Hawaii. He recently purchased a condo and is now living in the shadow of Diamond Head on the island of Oahu. Brian has since received his undergraduate degree in August 2008 from the University of Hawaii. Brian made us grand parents in 2002. In addition, Brian graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Nursing Degree in 2010. He is now an Intelligence analyst, working in Pearl Harbor. Christian remains on active duty as an Naval Officer and serves as a pilot. He flies out of McGuire AFB. Christian is married to Chrissi. They made us grandparents in 2012. Our grandsons name is Max. In 2014 we were blessed with a granddaughter named Lydia. My wife and soul mate, Linda (Leese), graduated from Alleghany High School, Cumberland, Md in 69. Linda and I have been married for 37 blissful years. I have been the Senior Information Systems Consultant at Loyola University Maryland for the past 16 years. Linda and I are happy to be back in the states. We were away far to long. We have been caring for my dad and Linda's mom in our home for a number of years. Dad passed away in June of 2006. I am grateful that we have had the opportunity and the means to be able to provide a place and care for our parents. You will also find a link to my dad's life story on our website family.underwoodconsulting.org. In February 2013 I retired from a 16 year career at Loyola University. I am now enjoying the fruits of my labor spending a lot of time volunteering in our marina. I am currently serving as Vice Commodore at the GNBA (Gunpowder Neck Boaters Association). I also created and manage our website; mygnba.com. My entire family loves to travel which is very evident by looking at our family website. I also run my own Consulting business, (Underwood Consulting. underwoodconsulting.com) In the early 90's we bought a 10 acre mountain top in Accident, Md. For now we savor everyday we can spend on the Chesapeake Bay. We currently enjoy our 40ft. 2007 Sea Ray Sundancer sport yacht, but like most boaters, we are looking forward to the next bigger boat. P.S., During my childhood I used my middle name but after leaving Frostburg I started using my full name which is Hans-Juergen Underwood. I can be found by googling Hans J. Underwood.
