Julia's Story

I had the pleasure of attending Verdun HS during the 1962-63 session of my Junior year. Since we had the option of dorming or not, four or five of us traveled daily some thirty miles via school bus from St Michele to Vedurn. We stopped on the edge of town to pick up another classmate, who hailed from NYC, before making the last leg up that hill into the school yard. Mary McCalib and Peter, who were among my fellow commuters, enjoyed a bit of a social hour during those bumpy, sometimes chlly rides to and from school. My younger sister, Kathy traveled a little further to school each day to Toule Rossier, which was in the opposite direction.. The following year we relocated to Kaiserslautern Germany, where I finished High School. After returning to the States, I continued somewhat of a nomad life style, moving nearly from coast to coast, with job re-locations, and traveling from Hawaii to Israel for pleasure, over the past fourty years. About eight years ago, I returned to live in Nevada, after leaving Reno in the late 60's, and have settled in Las Vegas. My three sons and five of my eight grandchildren all live in Las Vegas. I recently re-retired and looking forward to catching up with all those things I didn't seem to have time to do! Other plans were equally changed as I followed the path of most....Landing a part time position at a large Dept Store while attending Reno Jr College. I...Expand for more
moved on to full time work at "the phone company" and remained with "Ma Bell" aka AT&T some thirty five years before retiring. My first job at Nevada Bell, where I got paid $67.00 a week to count installer's work units.. Although I had not reached the magic number "21" (very critical in Nevada), I cut my teeth on the party scene during that first year of full time employment. What I remember most about it is I was a few minutes late, often, and suspended a couple of hours once for this infraction, which brought me to tears as I left the building. I also rembember experiencing my first (and only) tremor from a minor quake while at work that first year. I didn't know whether to jump under the desk or flee the building. The quake subsided before I could decide.... It's no surprise that travel became my fondest pasttime, which subsequently migrated into my side line business/avocation. As I kept busy over the years, I thought I'd eventually 'retire' from my career and take on the travel enterprise full time. However, the closer to that point I came, the further away my interest in the travel industry moved. I still keep the idea on the back burner, and may actually pick up the ball and run with an inbound travel entity, someday. I do still enjoy traveling for pleasure. I especially enjoy sharing the travel bug with my grandchildren, who have accompanied me on many outstanding junkets.
