Julia's Story
I am married with my husband of almost 44 years. We have 3 boys and 1 girl but I should say 4 boys and 1 girl. A best friend of my middle son while in middle school adopted us after loosing his mom. He just moved in and we helped to complete his education and upbringing. We have 10 grandchildren. When I married my husband he was already in the Air Force. The good thing about being a spouce of a military person is that you get to visit other countries and states. We were assigned to Abilene, San Antonio, Mississippi, Maine, The Philippines and Germany. Upon getting back from Germany I started working at Kelly AFB from 1983 to 1998. Near the closure of Kelly I was hired to work for McAllen Border Patrol. I worked for the McAllen Border Patrol from 1998 to 2009. My husband too was working in the same location. He arrived in McAllen about 6 months prior to me. We were just lucky that we ended up in the same area. He had to take a down grade to be able to find a Civil Service Position but it didn't take long to get to where he was at Kelly. My husband wanted to retire but decided to wait until my time was up. I was so lucky that my position was upgraded to a GS 9 and in a year a GS-11. During the p...Expand for more
rocess of being a GS-9 I also put in for a position in San Antonio hoping to work for the San Antonio Border Patrol. What are the chances? The location is very small and someone has to die or retire to get a position. Well to make a long story short I was excepted for a GS-9 position. Finally we could come home. My husband could retire and I would continue my years in service in San Antonio until my time to retire. During the time spent in the Valley one of my sons was murdered and we had to come home to bury him. He was only 20 years old. The hardest thing you can go through is loosing your child. We made it and made it together as a family. This was the most difficult time in our lives. While in the valley I lost my mom, my mother-in-law and my little sister-in-law who had downsyndrome. I retired January 1, 2011. My husband and I like to travel when we can. In 2009 we went back to Germany before my departure from the valley and before starting my job in San Antonio. Again in 2011 we went back to Germany and spent 30 days visiting. This was too long. I love Germany but 30 days is way to long. We are now in San Antonio and hope to hear from my old classmates of the graduating class of 1970.
