Julian's Story

Life While I did become an engineer, thanks to Mr. Harry Ross my drafting teacher (He and Feb are doing GREAT by the way.) there was a a 6-year delay from getting my degree. I spent 6 years on active duty as a Marine Officer, flying around in the back of an F-4 Phantom, like Goose in "Top Gun" except in a more respectable fighter. After six years of short haircuts (remember the sixties?) and trimmed moustaches, I finally went back to Cal-Poly to finish my undergraduate work. I finally gradumacated with a BS in electrical engineering. (The world has never been the same since.) During that time in second stab at college, pushing 30, I worked the swing shift at Rockwell Autonetics (now Boeing IDS) while finishing my degree. I did that so that I would have at some engineering experience by the time I got my degree. The day I graduated I was promoted to a Member of the Technical Staff II (yawn). I needed more action in my life, so I joined the Marine Corps reserves, while a full-time student and a full-time engineer. It worked out just fine. Many people were proud of what I was doing, but I pissed off enough engineering managers because I would take off for a couple of weeks of active duty. It was a great break for me to be away from work and school and relax with my Marine buds in some far-off place like 29 Palms. Okay, I did to the Med, skied the alps, and almost checkemated some Bostonian while crossing the English channel to Dover (can't remember the French city where the fairy departe, but the French can't see to remember us (US?) so I guess we're even.....n'est pas? I also went the Thailand, Puerto Rico, and spent some time training the (PPCLI) Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Alaska. It was cold weather traing in January 1985. Now I have some reference as to how cold a witch's breast can be. Picture yourself (okay picture) me in the Alaskan Tundra at 2:00 AM hanging my legs over a makeshift latrine trying to relieve my constapation and praying...Expand for more
I wind before anything breaks off from freezing. By that time, I was already trained in parachute operations, earned my 2nd pair of gold wings (The first pair was for qualifying as a RIO..remember...Goose!) and experienced my best jump ever---from a C-130 onto the cold dense air over the Alaskan Tundra. It was better than any Sports Night as Marshall. What da ya think so far? Not too bad for the second leader of the Knight Lads, huh? By the way, it was with the Knight Lads that I experienced my only days (okay seconds) of battle....no, no I take that back! I did get pounced on while I was at one of the Griffith Park Love-ins! (Tom LaBonge, how about it? Are we ever gonna have another Love-in there? Oh, no, maybe not. There's no smoking (of anything....Salmon, too?) at the park.) Okay, about a Love-in without the pot? Hmmm, that would be like a "Laugh-In:" without Dick. Say, "Good Night, Dick." So, let's see, ahh right the Marine Reserves, Cal-Poly and engineering at Rockwell. Well, I did many other things after that. Discovered that how to make heat seeking missiles obsolete--but, that would be too costly for so many companies in so many ways. I learned to play piano, guitar (but not like David Storrs...akd "I. Like) check out the 1970 yearbook, if you don't know what I mean.) and I completed the two year training course at the Stella Adler Academy neare Hollywood and Highland. (By the way, I ran into Pablo Marz, aka John Lopez, at a play in Oct 2007...just a few weeks before writing this. I have also kept in contact with David Storrs, (recently), Victor Dubois (dseditor for "Braveheart, The Last Samurai and sole editor of Anna Karinina), and another former Knight Lad. Memeories to his dear wife, friend and Marhshall alumnus, Alisa Dubois (Palino twins-Cathy's in San Francisco,)I keep in touch with Deborah Marvin and talk to Donna Bulseco once in a while. Anybody see Major Kramer, Debbie Weinstein, Paul Able, Jerry Messinger, geez, so many years too many words
