Julie's Story

For the majority of my young life I was the one branded the reject, the class freak, the one who endured the bullying, verbal abuse, and torment because I was different. My heart goes out to those who suffer from cruel classmates because I know first hand the pain they suffer of ridicule, rejection, and a complete lack of compassion. No one knew my struggles or took the time to understand; it was easier to dish out cruelty than it was to be kind. It wasn't until a failed suicide attempt, an act of desperation, to hopefully find someone who would allow me the freedom to express the inner turmoil with identity that I had battled since early childhood. The whole Transgender realm was very new in the early 1970s; the term itself was still unknown and didn't evolve until much later, along with a whole vocabulary that is all too confusing and difficult to navigate. There was no language for those like me to describe the inner battle of gender and identity.. Personally I detest the idea of labels and prefer to just be me without the need to qualify and categorize. I was fortunate to find my way to the quidance and the medical intervention that enabled me to, at long last, bring mind and body into one. For the last 40+ years I've been a very happy well adjusted woman who has enjoyed success in my career and life goals, and I'm so grateful and thankful for supportive family, friends, and those whose paths intersected with mine. So many left with me with pieces of their own lives that have had a significant impact in my journey. I have no regrets, no bitterness or resentment for my past life because without that valuable history and that desperately unhappy young boy I could not have grown into the remarkable and unique woman I am today. While there are those who still believe it their right to pass judgment, criticize, and condemn, I respond with no hesitation tha...Expand for more
t you have every right to your opinion but you also cannot begin to know my experience or the mental torture I dealt with in those early years. We live in a current time of increased awareness and understanding that was not there in the 1970s and that fact made it much more difficult to verbalize my needs and find the appropriate medical help. I believe that the old adage of never judging until you've walked in the other person's shoes is very sage advice. I have been blessed beyond my expectations in this life, my heart is full of joy as each new day brings with it a new adventure waiting to be discovered. I choose to dwell in a spirit of Peace, Love, and Harmony with both nature and those who share this planet with me. I love cottage living and my little sanctuary is filled with my treasured vintage and antique items scavenged with a discerning, thrifting eye. I have a particular love for antique china and have gathered an extensive collection. I am descended from a long, successive line of artists and musicians and I enjoy anything that allows me to use my talents of creativity, design, and style. I now work in the healthcare field providing advocacy and care to those who are marginalized, alone, and forgotten. My own history has proven its value as I assist others to achieve their their goals of health, well being, and independence. Through my life experience I learned the all important lessons of forgiveness, not making biased assumptions, compassion, and that a spirit of love can do so much more to quell the fires of hate and intolerance than any other force. I believe in promoting peace and unity rather than division and this is what I bring with me to the people I serve and hopefully leave their lives with a piece of myself that inspires them to strive for the same goals. May you each find your own place of joy and never let anyone take it from you.
