Julie's Story

College I actually started in a junior college in Washington state, my family moved to Nevada and I ended up in Reno. It was the closest town to where my family lived that had a university. I went to school part time and worked full time to pay for college. I worked at Hexcel skis for years in quality control. We got free skis bindings and lift tickets around Lake Tahoe. It was fun! Then I went to work for IGT (International Game Technology) as a manager in manufacturing slot machines. They didn't give us any free machines or even any tips on how to win. rt dept. I was manager on Graveyard which enabled me to go to college in the daytime. In the summers and during lay-offs I was a 21 dealer in downtown Reno. Of course it is always fun when you play on the dealers side of the table. I didn't care if I lost! It didn't occur to me to go to medical school until I was about 30. I applied and started when I was 31. My major in college was interior design. The dean of the college couldn't understand how I would even think about leaving the home ec college to attend medical school. I just told her it was still interior design, just a different kind of interior design. I thanked her and told her good-bye.
