Julie's Story

I always wanted to be a Doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were almost right. After leaving Wills to go to Pace Academy my sophmore year, I was very unhappy. I was always the smart (but poor) girl there on a financial scholarship. Not everyone there had that attitude, I did meet some great friends there. Then, my world came crashing down around me when my sister Paula died in a car accident in Feb '86. She was my best friend and more like a mother than my mom could be during my childhood. I chugged along for a couple of years, not really caring about school or my future (or life for that matter.) I just didn't really feel I belonged anywhere. I left Pace Academy and returned to Wills for the last part of my senior year, but I had been gone so long I didn't feel I belonged there, either. I finally dropped out of school altogether, got pregnant with my son Zach and got my GED. I finally started college in 1993 to get back on track from where I veered off course after I lost my sister. I enrolled at Kennesaw State as a pre-med major, but I still couldn't feel the desire like I did when I was younger. So I went to paramedic school and worked as a medic from 1998 to 2008, mostly at Grady Hospital. I found that although I was meant...Expand for more
for a life in the medical field, being a Nurse was a better fit for me than being a Doctor. I enjoyed spending time with patients and getting to know about them and their families, not just diagnosing and treating them. During that time I had my second son, Grayson at 32, which was a MUCH different experience than when I was 18! So I was a single mom (marriage was not sacred in my house, it was a financial stepping stone or a way to relieve boredom or loneliness, but something you could get out of if you wanted to pretty easily - hence the 5 marriages of my mother and 3 of my oldest sister Joni) with 2 kids to provide for. So I returned to Kennesaw State and entered the Nursing program in 2004. After some tough times medically with my youngest son (severe asthma and life-threatening peanut allergy) and losing my mother to lung cancer in April '07, I finally graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in July '08. It was a long and difficult road for me, but I achieved a goal I should have reached in 1992, had I not made some very poor decisions in my teen years. I learned a lot about myself and people in general during those times, and I became a much better person because of it. Now with my oldest son starting college, my future looks brighter for me than it ever has before.
