Julie Whitman's Story
Life
In Kindergarten and First Grade, I attended Beverly Vista Elementary School in Beverly Hills. One of the boys I had a crush on then was named Ricky and I used to tease him that he was "Ricky Ricardo!"
From Second through Sixth grades, I attended Westwood Elementary in Westwood (well, duh!!!) I was the tallest girl in elementary school and only one other boy equaled my height, first name of Steve. There was another girl who was tall named Barbara Silverstein and she used to pick on me in four square, throwing that rubber ball at my knees and say mean things. If you're out there, Barbara, I forgive you!
My best friend's name was Susan Gilmore. She lived in the back of my apartment complex. Her parents were from Canada, I think. Another good friend I used to ride skateboards with was Laura Butler. I remember her to have long blond hair and she was a tomboy and we used to get together a few times a week after school.
Before I attended high school, I went to Paul Revere Junior High in Brentwood, for grades 7, 8 and 9th. I remember a real nice boy, I think his name was Steve (I seem to have a thing for the name Steve for some odd reason!) who was very short with beautiful curly hair who used to stand up for me when another girl, Melinda Jeffries tried beating me up because she said I was "too lady-like," since I never crossed my legs when I sat. Gee, I was pic...Expand for more
ked on a lot because I was taller than everybody else and extremely shy and instead of laughing along with everyone, or beating them up because they were shorter than me, I stood there and cried!!!!!
I attended Livorno American High school in 1974 as Julie Kim Whitman. I was very tall, usually wore long dresses and had long brown hair. I usually wore it in two braids and wore no make-up. I spent a lot of time alone, sitting under the umbrella pines on campus, writing poetry.
Mr. J Verna and Mr. Flanagan were my English teachers and Mr. Charles Baudo was the school Principal. All three of these gentle souls really inspired me to keep writing and to have faith in myself.
My stepfather was Mr. Burke O'Connell and I had a younger brother, Jeff, who attended there. Burke wrote his autobiography about his experiences as a combat photographer during the Italian campaign in WWII and the Florentine woman he fell in love with which my boyfriend and I published in December, 2006 called "The Last Farewell." We've created a website at the same name with the word net after it. We'd love you to check it out and sign our guest book.
I am now Julie Whitman Jones, divorced with 3 kids; 22, 19 and 12. I live in a coastal suburb near San Francisco, CA. I would LOVE to hear from anyone who attended the same schools and reminisce with them about, what I consider, the "good old days."
