Julie's Story
Life
I've lived in Alaska since 1976. Married Tim in 1990. He's a civil engineer. We adopted Rumen from Bulgaria in 1998 when he was 9 years old. We live in Sitka, a small town of 8000 people. It's on one of the islands of the Southeast Alaska archipelago. I think we're pretty spoiled here as far as living in a beautiful place; Sitka faces the ocean with snow-covered mountains behind, we have a rain forest climate with lots of waterfalls, bears, eagles and whales and a gazillion islands.
Workplace

Service in Oregon, and then Idaho. In '81 I transferred to Sitka, Alaska. Made some friends that fished commerically and thought that looked like a lot more fun than the Forest Service so in '84 I bought a fishing boat. I've been commercial fishing for salmon and halibut now for 21 year. In the winters I teach marine safety and CPR/First Aid. I'm a voluteer EMT with the Sitka Fire Department's ambulance squad and also their mountain rescue team. Being an EMT has got me hooked on emergency medicine so last winter I decided to return to school. I'm currently working on a nursing degree.
