Julio's Story
Life
Probably, most of you do not remember me. Back at the Hill, I was not a nerd, jock, class clown or player. It is hard to believe that, it has been thirty-one years since my high school graduation! Now, my head, covered with bald spots and salt and pepper hair, longs for its glory days. The middle-age spread is hard to handle and nothing to love. Bifocals define my vision of the world.
After graduating from Union Hill High School, I attended Rutgers-the State University, Newark Campus. In 1978, I took summer courses at the prestigious University of Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain. In 1981, I graduated with a major in Spanish and a minor in Hispanic Civilization. I considered the teaching profession but took the business route instead. I lent my expertise to several import and export companies in and around the World Trade Center.
In 1988, after the last Wall Street crash, I went to work for the Department of the Treasury. Think April 15th! I have been working there for the past nineteen years. Currently, I am a Customer Service representative, following the mission of a kin...Expand for more
der and gentler organization.
As for my writing career, it went the way of the M (34-36) sizes, the disco shirts and the bell bottoms! In 1996, one of my poems was published in an anthology. Creatively, photography has always provided some solace. In January 2001, I had my first exhibit and presentation at the John Cotton Dana Library, Rutgers University, Newark Campus.
My personal life has been a continuous source of enrichment. I met my wife, Iliana, while we were both students at Rutgers. We have been married for twenty-three years. She is a caring and loving person. Iliana has managed to stay sane despite having a Gemini for a husband and an Aquarius for a son!
On January 23, 2007, Adriel, our son, celebrated his twentieth birthday. In September, he will be a junior at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He is a Political Science major. Unlike his parents, Adriel is a conscientious objector. He stays active in Tent State, a political organization. As a Tent State member, Adriel fights for educational reforms, students' rights and the improvement of community services.
