Julius's Story

I'm one of 2 the guys and Henderson that was called "foot". I am the more handsome one though. Let's see where to begin. When we graduated in 75 Stanley Fleming and I moved in with his mother in Plainfield New Jersey to attend Bell & Howell School of electronics a.k.a. DeVry School of technology now. After about three months of cracking those books I decided I wanted to see the world so I joined the Air Force. Only to find out later that Stanley had joined as well and entered a month after I did and 76. I stayed in the Air Force 14 years getting out in 1990. My job in the Air Force was air passenger/ air freight specialist. In other words I delivered troops and cargo around the world. My first duty station from 76 to 78 was Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino California. While on temporary duty to Edwards Air Force Base in the Mohave Desert playing war-games I had the pleasure of welcoming Joe Brody on our flight. At that time Southern California was wild I was only 60 miles from Los Angeles. We would go to the beach in the mornings in a night go to the mountains and throw snowballs, how about that. In May of 78 I was deployed to Kadena airbase Japan. It was on the beautiful island of Okinawa. The island was only 60 miles long and 22 miles wide at its widest point. It was shaped like a "t". I did not know that Warner Evans was stationed over there with the Marine Corps until he returned from leave and I saw him in my terminal. He needed a ride to his camp on the North side of the island. I borrowed a friend's car; I think our knees were under our chins because the car was so small. It sounded like a chainsaw and we laughed all the way to his camp. I left Okinawa December of 79. My next station was Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield California which was about 60 miles from San Francisco, wow! I was at Travis for 18 months, got married and returned to Japan in 1981. This time I was stationed on the mainland right outside Tokyo at Yokota Airbase. Man, Japan is a fascinating country. If you never been there it may be a vacation spot that you might want to check out. It’s an 18 hour flight but is worth it. Needless to say once I got a taste of the Far East it was not hard to dismiss the other side of the world with all that snow and rain. I loved the tropics and the Far East, yeah! What made this assignment so wonderful was that I was married and had three step kids and was stationed with three friends from Henderson, how bout them apples. You from Henderson remember Lenny "Spanky" Jordan, Eddie and Pam Loyd. While overseas a played a lot of contact football. That's where I got the notion to become, NBA official. I was playing and I started refereeing basketball and football while there. My wife at that time was aspiring to be an actress. When her Japanese agents would need Americans, men especially they would call me and my two boys. I'll get my friends and we will go to Tokyo and do television shows, maga...Expand for more
zine layouts and even movies. While in Japan my wife graduated from the University of Maryland in Japan. Her mother came over and was cast in Uncle Tom's cabin for the Japanese school system. As a matter fact the month before I was leaving I was a costar in a Japanese music video by a group which was their rendition of New Edition. I think Lenny was gone already by then, but Eddie was in it. While in Japan I visited Korea several times, the Philippines once and on our way back to the states in 85 we took a vacation in Hawaii and let Air Force pay for it. The next stop was JFK International Airport in Queens New York. I had been accepted for what the Air Force called a special duty assignment. I was one of about six Air Force personnel stationed at JFK as liaison for the military and the Department of Defense personnel moving in and out of JFK via commercial aircraft to Europe. We had about six airlines that we had to monitor to be a presence and assistance for DOD personnel transiting JFK. My wife was happy being so close to Broadway she could taste stardom. So she stayed in New York. After three years when I went to another special duty assignment at Philadelphia International Airport. That's where my mother lives, man that was great. After two years in Philadelphia and five years of having a taste of civilian life I decided in 1990 to terminate my Air Force career. Not knowing at that time that the Lord was leading me to Atlanta GA. I thought I was coming here to pursue a career as a NBA official but those plans soon changed. One day while attending a church service my pastor called me up and said the Lord wanted to tell me something. So naturally I went forward to get the word from the Lord and my pastor said you would no longer be called Brother Julius after today you will be called Minister Edwards. Wow, I could do nothing but cry folks. A few years later in 98 I was ordained as Pastor Edwards. Needless to say I got remarried to my beautiful wife Cheryl 2000. I also relocated my mother from Philadelphia to Atlanta in 2001. Her sister was living in Philadelphia has moved to South Carolina, so it's a Southern thang now. I am currently completing my bachelor's degree in pastoral leadership from Newburgh Theological Seminary and College of the Bible. I am also a pencil portrait artists and a freelance photographer. That Miller beer cap that you see in my photos was placed there by accident and I can't delete it, Lol. It was a photo that I'm going to submit to the photo contest. I have one son and one stepdaughter, to grandkids and one great-grandson. So that's my journey to this point. I'm very much honored to have the opportunity to serve the Lord and the capacity of a pastor. It is rewarding to know that I am snatching souls from the pit of hell. Keep reading and looking at my page because photographs of this journey will be coming soon. Be encouraged brothers and sisters for the Bridegroom is on His way. <><
