June's Story

I lived on Gallatin Street in Hyattsville Maryland. My grade school was across the street. I could look out my bedroom window and see it, and way back then, it was called "The Little School," sadly, it is no longer there, but a small park has taken its place. From 1st through 3rd grade my very best friend was Betty Toy, a Chinnese girl who spoke very little English. I used to help interpete everything she said to the teachers. She was the smartest kid in class! I would love to hear from her again; and it is not just a myth or a joke, because, her parents actualy did own a laundry mat which they lived above!! . . . and, at that time, the public library was next to the Hyattsville Fire Station; a block over was the Hyattsville Police Station (I forget the street name); then there was Route One down the street and on the corner there was the Hyattsville Armory and the C&P Phone Company; The Hotshops further up, Lustine Car Dealership, the Movie Theater (for intermission they would have this guy and a little dog who would jump through hoops and do other tricks before the movies started - all the kids thought it was great!) I remember it was 25 cents to get in!! There was a Pepboys, Highs, and Lizenbee's Jewelers! From the Little School I went to . . . bet you can't guess - "The Big School" - actually, Hyattsville Elementary - it's still there! My neighbors included Tony, Linda and Rita Zancan; Mike Bello who married Carol Dudley of Northwestern (graduate of 66 I think - she had a sister Linda Dudley),Johnnie Poole, DeeDee Poole, the Gaineys (too many to count), the Doyles (too many to count), the Harrington's (again - mega kids); Mike O'Connor, Butch Norris, Bobby Brennan, David Yerogoski, Althea Short (Patti);Al Marks and Johnnie Marks; Laurie Trainum and Hughie Whalen, the Donnellys (Helen and Patti - and too many more to remember) - my brothers of course, the Duvalls - the Hyattsville gang!!! Most of us hung out at Shirley's Variety, some of us more than the others . . . but when we did, we would manage to raise a little . . . "trouble" . . . very innocent of course! Shirley's was a little store on the corner of Gallatin, which actually, originally my stepfather...Expand for more
, back in the day, had opened as "Boyds." I went to Hyattsville Jr. High School and from there to Northwestern High School. Patty and Helen Harris(sisters) were good friends of mine in 7th,8th and 9th grade, they moved away before I started Northwestern and I have lost track of them. I also hung out with Paulette Dinsmore (she graduated from DuVall High School)and Diane Morton (from Northwestern). In Highschool, my best friends were Frannie Schiappi, Terry Denny, Patty Wall, and Linda Zancan. I haven't seen most of my classmates since I graduated highschool. My maiden name was actually Dukes but I was always known as Boyd, which was my stepfather's name. I have brothers, Hugh Boyd- graduated in 73 from Northwestern (deceased), Sean Boyd, Danny Boyd and Buddy (Walter) Boyd (also actually a Dukes, a graduate of Northwestern in 67). I have three grown children, two sons ages 38 (Robert) and 31 (Matthew) and a daughter 23 (Emily). Also 4 grandchildren, (3 grandaughters and one grandson); Nicole 15; Allison 14; Robert 13 and Brielle 3. The 3 year old is is so much fun. I work in Bethesda for a Commercial Real Estate firm which I enjoy, and also look forward to being able to retire from if I ever get my money back out of the economy! I married Robert Brennan, a year ahead of me in highschool when I was eighteen, we have two sons together. We were married for approximately 10 years with a "break" you may want to say, in-between of a couple years. We divorced and I then married Rodney Duvall several years later, who died approximately 8 years ago, we had divorced when our daughter, Emily was very young. I am now remarried, very happily and my fifth anniversary is coming up in June. I do not plan any additional marriages or to have any additional children (HA!) only additional grandchildren, hopefully. I live in Frederick which is a great place to live. Many things to do here, great restaurants, etc., but it has grown very quickly, I liked it when it was country, as it was when I first moved here almost 20 years ago. I would love to hear from and maybe re-aquaint myself with some of my schoolmates who I have lost touch with, that would be a great feeling!!! June.
