June's Story

Happily re-married to a wonderful man - I finally took Martha Cross Stewart's advice, and actually married a younger man!!!!! It just took me all these years to figure out that Martha did know best!!! (Ok I am slow, but he was worth it!!! :) ) Peter was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, but grew up in IA, SD & MN. (His father was a minister! Ok so I married a PK!!! ;) ) We live in Charlotte, NC where I was born (his job keeps us here! Not me!!!) He is also a music lover and we both continue to sing (I'm still singing 1st Soprano and he sings 2nd Bass!) We enjoy traveling and try to participate in many activities around Charlotte and The Carolina's. We are lucky to actually have a heavily wooded back yard, that often reminds me of New Canaan! (But down South we have a lot of pine straw, which as you know we did not use up North, nor did he use in the upper Mid-West). His family is still having a hard time understanding WHY we use, much less buy Pine Straw!!! Update 9-9-10: Dad lives here in town, Mother (Janet) lost her 4 year courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer on July 28th, 2010. She proved to be a true inspiration to many persons in this area, and around the country, who followed her case; laymen, cancer patients, cancer survivors, and to the medical community alike. Her cheerful outlook and optimistic approach to her cancer - which from day one she had said - 'If you can't fix me...Expand for more
, learn all you can from my case, my body, to cure everyone else and prevent this disease." Mother never complained the entire 4 years about anything, except for the 1st week, when she was only frustrated that she had to wait one entire week to have the pancreatic surgery! (The Whipple Procedure - she had a modification of a modification Whipple Procedure). Dad (Tommy) is 86 years old, and still working (he re-opened his company last year)! He is amazingly everyone (including himself) and is beginning the learning process of living his "new life", as I call it, without Mother, but with much activity and vigor! He recently told my husband and I "I think I'm going to live longer than I thought!!!" Of course I said, "Well Dad, We are certainly glad to hear that!" :) Most of you will remember my sister Jan Johnson Serafen (Jan was in the class of '81, our family moved back to Charlotte in '79. I returned alone to New Canaan in Jan. of 1980) is happily married (1990) to a wonderful man from Norwich, NY. They and their two beautiful talented teenage daughters, are currently living again in Atlanta, GA, (after many years in VT). My youngest sister, Mary Elizabeth Johnson, is happily married (1998) to Tony Hansen of Cape Town, South Africa. They recently moved back to the US, (to CA) with their two young beautiful multilingual daughters, from Capetown, where she had been living on and off since '92.
