K's Story

The years go by so fast, just blessed I'm still here living my best life! MommyFrazzled's View On Business: Get Rich Quick Or Hard Work I am now crossing into becoming a parent of a child who is finished with High School and will be going to the next phase of her life. All graduates whether going on to college or not will be focused on careers. Making money. This is something everyone wants. The ultimate dream, big house, several cars, private jets, etc. What they see on TV is not always how the real world is. When I was younger I looked at the HoneyMooners and Ralph always had a get rich quick scheme. They never worked out, ever. He was a bus driver, he was married, he had a place to live, he had friends. He wanted more. Wanting more is different from ambition. Ambition takes planning. Get rich quick schemes do not work, if they did there would be tons of rich people. As my daughter moves forward, I put it to her to choose a career she feels she will like, one she knows she will be great at. It is possible to end up with a career you never thought you would have but it works because you are good at it, or you know to feed your family you have to work. I have absolutely no intention of getting her a job. My job was to raise her, she now will do what she has learned. I will advise her, offer her suggestions, and be there as support. Ambition is the desire for personal achievement. I worked and I liked each job I had. Every time I got promoted, my very next thought was what do I have to do to get to the next level. I never was content. My plan was not to be stagnant. As long as I have a brain, common sense, and sense enough to know I do not know everything there is always something new to learn then I will keep going. I learned quite a bit during my career, and I am still learning. One thing that is a skill is listening. It amazes me how many people do not listen. Every time someone is talking to give them information they don’t know they are talking. I listen to everything, and I do learn new things. I have always been one to share information. I can be impatient when someone does not listen. I don’t like talking just to hear myself speak though I am told I have a nice speaking voice. I honed that voice more by doing public speaking, teaching classes, and pitching ideas. Listening is not only taking in the words it is taking in the information the words are relaying. Because people can hear the words 10 times, and then tell you I heard you. They heard the words, they paid no attention to the message the words were relaying. It is because they thought they heard it or knew it already. The problem is, they will not get get far. You never know it all. That is the primary reason some people do not get far. Listening is a skill, without it you will not get far. I have always found it amusing when someone asks for help, I tell them what to do and they don’t do exactly as I said, or don’t do it at all. Yet they ask why isn’t anything happening. Because I did my part and told you what to do, you did not do your part. Simple. If what you already had in place was not working and you ask for help, and do not follow directions for whatever reason, then you should not be surprised at the end result. You got what you put into it, nothing. That is straight bottom line, it is why it is called work. Kevin Hart, said it, Everybody wants to get paid, but not everyone wants to put in the work. Absolutely. Communication is the opposite side of listening. Communication is a huge part of business. It can make or break any job. I have always been drawn to people who give a speech and it empowers you. Sometimes the topic was not necessarily anything that would affect me personally but I understood it completely based on how it was relayed. I learned early in my career how if you communicated in a way that engaged whoever was listening or was said in way the masses would understand you would benefit in any career. I speak based on my audience. I can talk to anyone from the newest and lower level staff members straight up to the top. I am telling the exact same thing but I am relaying the information in a way someone new doesn’t feel they are not smart or that someone is talking down to them. It happens, I am aware beca...Expand for more
use when I was in their seat I remembered how I received information. Communication, is not a personal thing, it is a necessary thing for any business to run, and run effectively. Another thing that can keep someone from being successful is Ego, being too cocky. I don’t have to scream it to from the rooftops I am successful, I prove it with the work. I will never say I know it all and have nothing else to learn, because it isn’t true. I will always listen to what someone has to say and take it in. There is no reason to belittle anyone, even if I do know more. I feel good about my work thru my success. And I will say, I have had some great mentors, who told me different things. Somethings I did, others I changed or did my own way. Ego has no place in business, it is why there is the saying check your ego at the door. Ego is personal, and can ruin business, especially when you have to work with others. I have been on teams, sometimes in the lead and sometimes not. I work based on my role. In either capacity the goal is still the same, to get the job done successfully. Then everyone wins. Period. Know your role when on a team, and do your part because everyone has one. No one wants to fail because one person did not do what they were supposed to do. An example is something I am working on now. I have asked for something I need specifically from the other person. I know it is needed, I have done it before. Now because they don’t see the need is of no consequence to me, if you want to accomplish success then give me what I need to make it happen. I have been where they are, someone told me do this, I said I did it this way before, they let me talk and then told me this was different. Conversation over, I did my part. They were correct, I knew one way, they knew another, theirs had better results and taught me something because I checked my ego at the door. I keep up with the times, I constantly read up about everything from finance to technology to Marketing. Every day someone is doing something that has surpassed who was on top. I also found that for every problem or project it can be achieved in more than one way. The primary goal in any business is the bottom line. Finance, Cost, Revenue. It is the way of the world. Small or large businesses, have to stay on top of things for longevity. If you don’t look toward the future you won’t be in it, is my feeling. What was great a year ago, six months ago, sometimes as little as 2 months, can already be considered out of date in some business. Things may not affect you at the moment but being aware is a must. Everything ages from people to ideas. When you stop, you are dead. So if you’re not, dead you better keep up or you will get left behind. As my parents told me, find a mentor in someone successful and watch and learn. Best advice I ever got. Actually, one person who was a huge influence on how I work today, I recently found on LinkedIN. I never got a chance to tell her what she did that changed me. She gave me and another co worker an assignment to do. The other person did everything but help. I did the writeup, but I added his name to it. Five minutes before the meeting he wanted to see it, I refused. We sat down and waited as she read the two pages, as soon as she was done, she looked up at me and said, "very good you wrote this by yourself." I was floored, I would not have ratted him out but I intended to let him know I don’t carry anyone. She let me know as a manager she was aware of her employees and their style of work. And she gave the credit where it was due. I got to tell her that and thank her. I never forgot it , I still whether as a team lead, as a co worker, as a partner, working for a client, I make sure I do my part and I give credit where it is due. I take responsibility when I mess up also, it doesn’t make me bad, it means I am human. Those starting out on the road to success it can be great as long as you are prepared. Nothing is impossible, just know you get out of it what you put into it and check your ego at the door. This is my own view based on how I work, the things I have experienced. Most times people are aware, I do know various business industries, and then they find out more when they speak to my. I am my own resume, and as such I want to put forth an image of a smart, well educated, open minded, easy going, businesswoman with a great personality, who you want to work with. I am all about fun, but when it’s time to go to work, I am working at 150% always. Kelly M.. Mommyfrazzled
