Kam's Story

7-1-09 I know, I suck! I still havent joined and you all probably think I'm an A**H*le for not answering my messages. ** I PROMISE THAT I WILL JOIN SO THAT I CAN REPLY TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE LEFT MESSAGES ** I Apologize for NOT BEING ABLE TO ANSWER... I'm REALLY NOT Being a JERK...I'm SORRY I haven't really done anything to help change the world.I continued working at the Chevy dealership after graduation. I stayed there 'til 1981, was laid off just before Christmas (gee thanks). I went to work at Western Motors in 1982 and served out my apprenticeship and became a full fledged Journeyman Automobile Mechan....er, Technician in 1987. In 1990 I went to work for an Independant Shop in Sebastopol, "Earth in Upheaval" You've probably seen their license plate frames on some Volvo's, Mercedes and Saabs around Sonoma and Marin Counties. That ended with a lower back injury in 1993 and I went through the Workers Comp Vocational Rehab program. At least I learned some computer skills as I went back to work...as a Bartender! I worked at a place called the Aquarium in Petaluma, it soon changed it's name to Jakes Bar and Grill. What a great Family to work for! I really enjoyed that lifestyle and met some really great folks, including my Wife (and YES, we are still together). I worked their from 1994 to 2001 (I went part time when I landed a job in 1997). I shifted gears from Auto Tech, who works both inside and outside,no matter what the weather may be, to manufacturing fiber optic and wireless Telecommunications equipment (No, NOT telemarketing, I hate it when folks confuse the two), indoors for Advanced Fibre Communications in Petaluma. My manager was a San Marin Alumni. I ended up working in our Warranty Services Dept. until I left, not by my choice, in 2003 when the company was sold to Tellabs and many of us were told bye bye. Great severance package though. In between, both my wife, Shannon, and I managed an Apartment Comples in Rohnert Park. In 1999, our Apt. Manager retired and his assistant manager was, well lets say "demoted" to Private Citizen and Tenant. A flyer was circulated throughout the complex inquiring about the Assistant Manager job. I don't know WHY I did this, but I applied for the job (what do I know about Apartment managing?), well guess what? I was the ass't until August of the same year when the replacement manager decided to move to New Orleans (I wonder if...ah, nevermind). Both my wife and I got the Apt. Manager position, my wife helped out with Apt. turnovers and became a very valuable asset and earned the Property Managers appreciation and trust. This lasted until January 2002, when we were replaced by the New Owners New Property Management Company. He didn't own the complex long, a year maybe? I understand he took a bath on the sale...too bad. In 2004, my Mom sold her home in Sonoma County and moved out of state, Utah to be exact, Saint George. Its just above the Arizona border and a tad to the right of the Nevada border. I helped her move and I just was taken by the Beauty of the city (the red rocks, mesa's, mountains and desert, and Las Vegas is just an hour and 20 minutes drive away!). So, in 2006, after b...Expand for more
ouncing from one POS job to another and Finally settling for a job at Staples in 2005, we took a leap of Faith and moved to Saint George (I was able to transfer to the Staples in Saint George, I have to admit, that was pretty cool of them to do that for me). I actually went out there first, my Wife was working at a pretty good job in Petaluma and we were O.K. with the rent. Speaking of rent, you sure do get more for your money in Utah, Unfortunaly one of the deciding factors of leaving Beautiful California. After re-uniting a few months later, we have a pretty nice little place in Saint George, about 1 1/2 - 2 miles above Arizona and 30 miles East of the Nevada border. Beautiful and HOT in the summer. I ended my Retail Era last year and left Staples to work at, what Hopefully will be a long Career, Cinnamon Hills Youth Crisis Center. What's that? you may wonder, well I'll tell Ya. Southern Utah is home to a dozen or so Facilities that house troubled teens and hopefully get them rehabilitated to become Productive, Law-abiding Citizens. Thi is their LAST Chance before Juvenile Hall, Jail or Worse. My job title is Night Watch and I sit in a unit, usually 4 to 8 rooms with 8 Students per room, and post at the door and make sure that they sleep and Not beat up on each other...or Me, and try not to make a run for it. By far this is the most Rewarding job that I've had, probably more rewarding than re-lining the brakes of a Volvo or replacing a clutch of a Mustang. Not that those are Bad things, come on now. But I get a real feeling that I may be helping somebody stay on the straight and narrow. O.K. Enough of that! Anyway that's what I have been up to. Oh,I do have 2 Bee-U-ti-Ful Girls from my 1st marriage, in 1984, who are ages 23 and 20 and Both living in Calif., Novato and Santa Rosa. My oldest Daughter, Nancy, cuts hair in the Costco Shopping center in Novato, what a trip, the same area where I grew up and did "stuff". My youngest Daughter, Robin, goes to college and works at the Rohnert Park Safeway in the Bakery Dept. They have a 12 year-old brother, Konnor (he's my son from my second and current marriage), who is in the 7th grade here in St. George. He listens to Heavy Metal and Classic Rock - the stuff that his Dad listened to in High School (rolling my eyes) and wants to be the Drummer in a Punk Rock Band with 2 other friends of his. He has my Full Blessing on that. In fact, I've taken my oldest to see Social Distortion twice now. Its pretty cool when your kids share the same love of a band or music genre as you do, right? Wow, I have really written a lot here. Anyway, I still get out to Novato and Sonoma County every few months or so. I'll have to become a member here so that I can see just who has left messages for me. I really hope that everybody is doing well, I miss some of you more than I can say. I hope to make it to the reunion this summer, but then I will be breaking my streak of missing each and every previous reunion. The 20th really pissed me off, I was busy getting an Apartment ready for a new tenant while the rest of you were getting caught up. I DID want to make it to that one, oh well. Take care and Enjoy Life!
