Richard's Story
Life
After HS graduation I attended MTSU, but didnÂt have a clear idea of a major or career field. I joined the TN Air National Guard as a weather forecaster. This was a fascinating subject, but it appeared computers would eliminate all the job opportunities. I returned to MTSU to study environmental science. By now the country was in an Âenergy crisis so I took the opportunity to sell and install solar heating systems. This went well for a few years, then the crisis ended, and so did the business. Meanwhile I learned about business, and personal computers. This led to a degree in Accounting and various job in accounting systems. IÂve worked for companies who made fuel for nuclear submarines, TBS in Atlanta (saw the Olympics outside the window), and various accounting software companies. crisis had passed. IÂve now returned to my familie's roots in White Co. TN. IÂm renovating my grandfatherÂs boyhood home, and work for a software company that serves local government offices. Oh yeah, I married a wonderful preacherÂs daughter from Franklin (26 years ago) and have two kids, no grandkids (yet).
Military
I joined the TN Air National Guard in 1973 and was asked to join the weather unit since I scored so well on the entrance exam. This proved to be a unit with some very bright members and an irreverent attitude that reminded me of the TV show "M*A*S*H". I attended weather forecaster school in Illinois during the coldest winter in recent history. Weather forecasting was being computerized so it appeared to be a dead end career field, what I didnÂt realize was the huge opportunities that would come with the intersection of the two technologies. I served my six years and retired.
