Karen's Story
Life
I live in New Mexico and teach at a local community college. I live with hubby and 1 dog.
School
I attended Palo Verde High School in Tucson, Arizona and lived to tell about it!!! I was one of those kids that never fit in. It was hard at the time, and I would not go back and do it again, but I am glad that I went through that difficult time because I think it may have helped to inspire me to succeed in adult life.
Hey, remember, class of '82, when we won spirit contests our sophomore AND senior years!!!! Cool!!!
Workplace
My first job after graduating high school was working at JC Penney at El Con Mall. After moving to Flagstaff in 1985, I worked in convenience store management. In 1991, I began college and worked as a CNA. After graduating with my associate degree in nursing from Yavapai College in 1993, I moved to Phoenix and later to the Tampa Bay area. I completed my bachelor's degree in 1999 and my master's degree in 2004. I worked as a case manager at Maxim Healthcare and as an adjunct instructor at Pasco-Hernando Community College, where I taught nutrition and medical terminology! I am now an associate professor at NMSU-A in New Mexico.
I always wanted to be a writer or an actress when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were right.
I love to read a variety of books, listen to music (I love a variety of music, from classical to rock to international, especially Celtic music).
If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have contact with other people, a sense of purpose, and appreciated to be able to deal with the day-to-day.
My dad is my hero. He always believed in me and encouraged me to pursue my career ambitions. He was a strong yet sensitive influence in my life when I was growing up. ...Expand for more
He is full of wisdom, humor, and love. My second hero is my husband, who has patiently tolerated me and encouraged me to follow my dreams. He is a gentleman and I feel blessed that he is in my life!
I was born in Portland, Oregon. My parents tell me that we moved to Arizona on the advice of my doctor because I had horrible allergies. I grew up in Tucson and have lived various places in Arizona since graduating from high school. My husband and I moved to Florida in 2001 to be near his parents (my husband is an only child). His father died in 2004 and now we are looking after his mother, who lives with us in NM.
The biggest surprise in my life is that I have been successful in my career and my education, and that my self esteem is way better that I ever thought it would be. I am not egotistical, but I do feel much more comfortable with myself than I did in high school!
If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the bathrooms, finish replacing the windows, and add on a screen room (lanai). My dream home would be paid for, low taxes, no more than 2000 square feet, and have a fenced yard for my dog(s).
If I won $100 million, I'd give $90 million of it to charity, then spend the rest on my family, my husband and buying a new home or two (and some cool cars, too!)
My current age is 46. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old and tired. I was so completely wrong.
I share my home with my husband and my pets, which I find comforting.
If I ever went to another high school reunion, people would be amazed that I have been successful and am actually popular now!
My first job was at JC Penney at El Con, where I got paid just above minimum wage to wrap Christmas presents. What I remember most about it is that I met my first husband there. UGH!!!!.
