Karen's Story
Life
After high school, I attended Highline Community College. A part time job turned into a full time accounting position, and I have been in accounting ever since. I have worked in a number of different capacities including accounts payable and receivable, sales and use taxes, financial reporting and auditing. In 1984, I married Jose Cables, also of the class of 1982. We have two beautiful children; our son Ryan, 21, is a full time student and our daughter Marina, 17, is a high school junior. Both of our kids are very talented musicians. Ryan can plan just about any instrument he picks up, but he is best at the clarinet, which is his favorite. . Marina can also play a variety of insturments but her favorites are the violin and clarinet. In 2008, Jose retired from the navy as a senior chief petty officer (a man of honor, as he says) with 26 years of service! With the navy, we have set up home in San Diego; Bermuda; Virginia Beach, VA; Japan; Whidbey Island, WA.; and Cornwall, England. In 2004, we returned to Virginia Beach. After over seven wonderful years as a stay-at-home-mom, I returned to the work force in 2008, taking an accounting specialist position with a local government contractor. Jose is a project lead, working for a very large defense contractor. And yes, I still keep in touch with my best buddy from high school, Monica (Schultz) Day!
