Karen's Story

Life After 30 years (can you believe that!!??) of traveling, raising kids, and working harder than hardly working, I've finally found the joy of my life. We live in Utah and are very happy. I write books and he writes music. We jam together a lot (I play bass guitar, he plays everything else). We're looking forward to our daughter, Michelle, visiting from New Jersey because she and her husband, Patrick, play bass/guitar (respectively) and we can't wait to all jam together! We're greatful that our son, Michael, his wife, Casey and their son Dylan, have moved back to Utah because we really missed them while in California. School High school was kind of weird for me. Everyone knew me in 7th and 8th grade, then I went away to Ireland. When I came back in 10th grade, everyone had moved on and I had to start over fresh; new friends, etc, especially since my best friend from Granada, April Crates, had moved to Missouri. I just put all my effort into studying. I never dated anyone from MV. The several proms I went to were with a guy, Patrick, from Excelsior over in Norwalk. (His wife and I took our kids to Hawaii together a few years ago, so we're all still friends!) I really did enjoy the proms. I usually doubled with Debbie Riche and Mark Murphy and we always had a lot of fun. I remember the Volley Ball -athons. Volley Ball all night and the song that went with it, "How long will this be goin' on?" I remember being in drill team. We did our parade at the Pomona Fair. That was the only parade I ever got to be in because I got in a car wreck right after that. I always really enjoyed drill team. I often tell my daughter she looks like Rita Meo. My favorite teachers were Misters #1 Gary Curtis!!!, Prantalos, Fairchild, Manuel, Hendricks (who always called me the Mick), and well, I don't recollect ever having any favorite female teachers. I think the absolute worst teacher I ever had was Mr. Nolan. He tried to teach math, but it was too darn boring for me. I remember once in Mr. Manuel's shorthand class when we were all supposed to be listening to a tape and writing out what the boring guy was saying. Mr. Manuel was talking to me from the front of the class. I, being in the back of the class, couldn't hear him. A girl (she was a year or 2 ahead of me and her name escapes me now) pulled out the earphone of my tape recorder. Donny Osmond's "Puppy Love" was not a requisite of that c...Expand for more
lass! Mr. Manuel failed me that very day!! I got in more trouble from my parents than anything else I had ever experienced because I was always an honor student! And why is Mr. Manuel one of my favorite teachers? Because I had him for so darn many of my classes, that I really got a chance to know him and I liked his method of teaching. He didn't tell me everything that he knew. He shared the information with and allowed me to grasp what I could. Gary Curtis was the same way. I remember, too, when my friends and I papered Gary Curtis' house. Actually, we did it several times, usually right before an event where we knew he would have to be up at 4:00 in the morning to participate, i.e. the senior breakfast. College I went to the University of Utah and got my BS in Behavioral Health (1996). I was raising my teenagers who graduated college before I did because they were going to college at the same time they were going to high school. It took 6 years to get a 4 year degree. I should have done it sooner! I have few to no memories of any fun at college in as much as I was working full time, too! Such is life. But I'm glad I did it! My career consists of counseling single teen-age mothers who otherwise have little to no support network. It is most rewarding. Workplace I've had some really great jobs in my 30 some odd years after high school. Utah County Sheriff's Office, Utah State (various Departments), even the Feds: Department of Defense and the Postal Service. Last year (Nov 2006) I got sick and tired of getting sick and tired of my job. (I would work a couple of years and get bored, then transfer.) I decided to put my money where my mouth is. I had wanted to drive the local bus for 5 or 6 years. I had a slight problem, tho. I weighed 350 pounds. I knew it wouldn't be safe because my skirt or shirt would get caught in the steering wheel when I drove my own car. But! I lost 200 pounds so I decided to go for it. They actually hired me on the spot! I was shocked because I had never driven anything bigger than my SUV. But, I LOVE it! It fulfills so many facets of my personality. I am amazed! Ralph Cramden didn't do the profession any justice. But, I gotta tell you, it is the BEST job I have ever had! I get my retirement from the State of Utah when I'm 65. I'm still young enough to have a decent retirement from UTA. I just keep asking myself, WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?
