Karen's Story
In school, I loved my time in mixed chorus, math and art classes. Maybe we had a class together?
After graduation, I attended SIU-E and earned a BS in Civil Engineering - Structures and a minor in Studio Art. I have been in the aerospace industry for over 35 years primarily analyzing aircraft structure. I have had great opportunities to travel the world both for work and pleasure. My best business trip was on an aircraft carrier, where we had a trap onboard and a cat shot off when leaving - too cool!!!
I never married or had children, so I have put much focus on volunteering my time & talents to my nieces/nephews, various social and professional organizations. One favorite organizati...Expand for more
on is the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) where I am involved at the institute level chairing the Career & Workforce Development Committee and at the local St. Louis Section level I organize events to encourage students and parents to look at aerospace engineering as an exciting career path.
I balance the analytical with creating things - quilting, sewing, knitting, crafting, etc....
I got brave at 40 and became involved with several community theater groups, where I moved from being in the chorus to being a principal player! One feat was singing the role of Suor Genovieffa in Puccini's opera "Suor Angelica" - and we performed it in Italian. Very challenging!
